What’s on our musical menu this week you ask? Well, how about an appetizer of tender folk tunes, a course of hypnotic post-rock, a side dish of post-punk, and to wash it all down, a helping of our finest rock and roll. Yes, plenty to go around this weekend – so grab a seat, throw on your bib, and dig in.


Friday, Jul 5

Glow Curve, Future Orients, Nocturnes at Yue Space
A full helping of indie rock groovers Glow Curve as the band finally releases their much-anticipated LP. With a stronger emphasis on vocals and slick, intricately rich electronics, the band seems to have found the perfect balance between dreamy dissonance and lush crescendos that keep you on your toes while needling their way to your heart. Simply put, they remain one of Beijing’s finest (and somehow still underrated) bands. Support from dance punks ruffians Future Orients and ethereal indietronica duo Nocturnes. RMB 150 

SNSOS, The White Papers, Lonely Leary at DDC 
Beijing instrumental rockers SNSOS who infuse their sound with math rock playfulness, dream pop pulp, and a splash of post-rock that are spirited, intricately assembled, and brimming with life join post-punk scoundrels Lonely Leary, who remain one of the most fierce live acts, and fellow post-punks the White Papers. MC Tingbudong (US), Fishdoll at fRUITYSPACE
MC Tingbudong whips up a frenzy at fRUITYSPACE as part of his Lil’ Ting Little Tour. The New York-based rapper works in English and Mandarin, using interactive technology and music to create immersive, politically charged experiences for his audiences, helping position Chinese hip-hop as a global phenomenon. Supporting him will be the ethereal hip-hop artist Fishdoll. RMB 60

Jukka x Deng Boyu x Sosoloid Shining Dimensions at Aotu Studio
Shining Dimensions, the new series curated by Guiguisuisui and Aotu Space that blend various creative mediums, hits its seventh edition under the theme ‘Creating a Poem.' This week's event will feature the music of Jukka Ahonen & Deng Boyu, and Sosoloid, the live painting of 9Shang, and the movement of Nan Guazi and Xinrou. Over the course of the performances, a poem will be constructed out of the words that the audience will then help recite during the final performance. RMB 50

Break the Silence, Central Park, Feline at School
Break the Silence (formerly Screaming Kong) play electro disco indie rock that will make you dance. Having gained a considerable following over the past couple years, tonight the band has booked a summer showcase in honor of the birthday for the singer and bassist. The Sailor’s Grape, OGMC, Drunkard, Devil Mask, Cosmic Adventure, Firewood Shed at 13 Club 
An evening of riotous head-banging tunes in Wudaokou with some heavy hitters and veterans of the scene looking to tear a hole into all the summer course students, including reggae-inflicted punks Sailor’s Grape, grunge mainstays Drunkard, metal thrashers Devil Mask, pop-rockers All Unknown, and many more. Bob Dupont & The Outstanding Vegan Bankers. Paths at Temple 
Bob Dupont & The Outstanding Vegan Bankers, Djang San’s alter ego and the natural sequel to The Amazing Insurance Salesmen, hits the stage for a night of rocking tunes alongside melodic poetry-laced indie rockers Paths. FREE 

The Great Buffalo Blues, Heretic, DJ Inaudible at Soi Baochao
Soi Baochao celebrates gets its indie groove on with performances by international alternative rockers Heretic, acoustic funk, rhythm and bluesmen The Great Buffalo Blues, and funky, bass-heavy DJ inaudible who’ll keep the party going all night long. FREE

Wang Lei and Yile at Mao Livehouse
Bassist Wang Lei and keyboardist Yile head over to Wukesong for the release of their newest album Absented Memories. Together since 2013, they create boundary-crossing music that seamlessly blends the world and ambient genres. RMB 100

Nicola Conte and Spiritual Galaxy at Blue Note
The Mercedes-Benz Jazz Masters Series welcomes guitarist, composer and bandleader Nicola Conte to the stage – never one to conform to a single genre, Conte’s newest album Let Your Light Shine On interweaves soul, groove and African beats. RMB 240-380

Astria Oboe Trio at La Plantation 
The three soloists, who have many national and international awards to their credit, perform a little-known repertoire that extends from the Baroque period through contemporary compositions. The unique richness of sound, created by a combination of oboe, oboe d'amore, and cor anglais, offers countless shades of sound and continues as a source of inspiration for contemporary composers. Liu Donghong and Sand at Jianghu Bar 
Liu Donghong, dusty blues singer of Sand, China’s first ‘cold rock’ band, and a scene player for over 20 years brings his band over to the cozy hutong spot for some tender rock and roll. RMB 80

DDC brings a multi-genre rock lineup to the stage this evening with post-rockers Later Islands, indie rock act Flower Wall, longstanding psychedelic rockers WHAI and chip-tune and 8-bit artist 4 Channels Club, who mixes up dubstep, trance, and drum 'n' bass elements with the 8-bit sounds we’ve grown up with. Macondo, Rhonda, Stranding Imbrium at Temple
Temple gets brings the goods with some heavy rock and earth-shattering rhythms as hard-edged instrumentalists Rhonda join math rock-infused up and comers Stranding Imbrium and staple powerhouse post-rockers (who describe their music as “volcano rock”) Macondo for an evening of instrumental rock that leaves nothing on the table. Tulegur at School 
Tulegur, the veteran Inner Mongolian folk-rock duo whose grungy revisionist take on throat-singing and the rich Inner Mongolian musical tradition, mixed with modern acoustic rock influences, performs tonight at School. RMB 80

Heike Wyler, Ophelie at Caravan 
As part of their singer-songwriter series, Caravan presents the German cellist and singer-songwriter Heike Wyler, whose influences lean on gospel, soul, and the blues, and the French singer-songwriter Ophelie, who is strongly influenced by artists like Bjork and Erykah Badu. FREE

Dimo at Yue Space
Indie folk-rock outfit Dimo, whose keen sense of pop and songwriting skills, has made them one of the scene’s longest running outfits celebrates ten years of entertaining with a special showcase at Yue Space with a buttload of special guests, including Wang Yuxi, Li Yong, and more. RMB 240

Next Door Band at Mao Livehouse
Long-standing rockers Next Door Band have been around for ages, stirring up the youth with their bubblegum-flavored indie pop that hits in all the right places. Catch them tonight as they celebrate the release of their new album. RMB 150 

Led Barons at Modernista 
Led Barons is a Led Zeppelin tribute project formed by four musicians of the Beijing scene with the intent of bringing to the stage classic tunes by one of rock 'n' roll's biggest bands and delivering a raw, hard-rocking spectacle worthy of the legendary group. FREE

Rylee Anuheakealaokalokelani (Anuhea) Jenkins was born and raised in Makawao on the island of Maui. After twists and turns that involved winning second runner-up and a Miss Congeniality trophy in the Miss Hawaii pageant and a move to San Francisco, she’s become Hawaii’s #1 female singer and songwriter. Just Chellin' at DDC

Pupils of Satan, The Last Resort at School 
Formed in 2007 in Lanzhou, five-piece metal outfit Pupils of Satan are currently on a 17-city tour of China. The band, who has played with all the greats from Suffocated to Tomahawk, will tear down the house alongside Beijing hardcore outfit The Last Resort. RMB 80

Zhang Ziwei and Yu Zijun at DDC 
Zhang Ziwei and Yu Zijun, the acoustic folk duo that has immersed audiences over the past year with their unique blend of indie pop and traditional folk, hit the road and kick off their tour at DDC. RMB 80

Asi Matathias, Victor Stanislavsky at La Plantation 
Hailed as one of the most outstanding young Israeli pianists today, Victor Stanislavsky will join the equally talented and acclaimed violinist Asi Matathias for this special one-off recital. RMB 200
