Chon (US) at Omni Space
Since its inception in San Diego, California in 2008, the progressive instrumental math-rock outfit CHON, consisting of guitarist Mario Camarena, Erick Hansel, and drummer Nathan Camarena, have slowly risen through the ranks over the years. This year, with the release of their third LP, the band solidified their forward-thinking take on a breezy blend of dovetailing guitar patterns and vigorously innovative rhythms. Milkymoon, Summer Vapour at School
Formed by a young group of friends in the south of China who discovered each other on account of their shared love of rock and roll, Milkymoon are a delirious blend of wispy psychedelic dream pop and saw-toothed twee punk that at times feels more like a collage of temperaments and ideas, embodying the fleeting adolescent minds behind it. Widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost voices on alto saxophone, Vincent Herring has earned his spot in the jazz pantheon playing alongside legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, and Freddie Hubbard. Wood Pushing Melon, Jajatao at Yue Space
Once described as "the most disturbing sound of Chinese rock," the rock supergroup Wood Pushing Melon are back with their new album Peacock. Originally formed in 1998 in Jilin's Changchun under Song Yuzhe, Zhang Fangze, Chen Chuangyuan, and Li Dan, all accomplished musicians in their respected fields, the band disbanded for some time in the 2000s before returning in 2016, garnering cult-like status in the process. Feverish, manic, unhinged, and hot-blooded – it’s pure unadulterated punk disguised as progressive art-rock helmed by some truly groundbreaking artists operating in the ether sphere of Chinese rock and roll. The Aaron Goldberg Trio at Blue Note
Hailed by Down Beat magazine for his “quick-witted harmonic reflexes, fluid command of line and cut-to-the-chase sense of narrative logic,” Aaron Goldberg has made his name worldwide as one of jazz’s most compelling pianists, both as a bandleader and frequent collaborator with the finest exponents of the music. Prairie, Ophelie, Yuni at Caravan
Caravan gives a toast to all the female musicians who make up the capital with a singer-songwriter night dedicated to a trio of ladies who kick all sorts of butt including American Prairie – "a cowgirl masquerading as a hippie masquerading as a jazz singer masquerading as an observer in the corner," soulful French singer Ophelie, and Belgian artist Yuni.
