What’s better than a cold popsicle on a hot day in Beijing? Surely the capital can experience some pretty tough dog days during the scorching summer months. Of course, there are your normal popsicle and ice cream varieties, but why not try something locals enjoy?

1.Mung-bean Popsicles 绿豆冰棍儿 Lǜdòu bīnggùn er

I grew up with these mung-bean flavored popsicles. In the back of my mind, this popsicle is more than just a refreshing treat to cool me down, but also something that takes me back to the time when vendors selling popsicles in old Beijing hutongs would shout as they walked: 绿豆冰棍儿 Lǜdòu bīnggùn er！

2. Twin Ice Lollies 双棒儿 Shuāng bàng er

This is another old Beijing classic that's been deeply rooted in the public consiousness for years. Even though there are tons of flavors to choose from these days, there is something special about 双棒儿 Shuāng bàng er that reminds me of when I was younger. This popsicle boasts a creamy milk flavor and it is a must-try for anyone who wants to live the Beijing experience!

3. Red Hawnthorn Popsicles 大红果儿 Dà hóngguǒ er

This popsicle made its name in  Beijing in the 1980s. As the name suggests, it is made from that popular Beijing fruit, the sweet and sour hawthorn. If you are looking for something to impress your taste buds, don’t leave this one out! The icy texture will surely wake you up no matter how drowsy you feel on a hot summer day!

4. Green Tongue 绿舌头 Lǜ shétou

When this popsicle first came out, it quickly dominated the market and has since become one of the most popular treats among kids. Unlike traditional popsicles, this one is frozen with jelly-like liquid, and once you've given it a few licks, your entire tongue will turn green. The concept might sound strange, but they are surely a catch among many Beijingers!

5. Old Popsicle 老冰棍 Lǎo bīnggùn

Judging by the look, this popsicle looks nothing special (I mean it's literally called "Old Popsicle" in Chinese). But the simple flavor of white sugar and water really hits the spot, and when you take a bite, it will surely quench your thirst and make you come back for more!
