Sureño Makes an Appearance One Last Time, May 17

This one is for the OGs of Beijing’s fine dining scene. Back in 2008 The Opposite House opened its doors and revealed its legendary signature restaurant Sureño. Now, the restaurant is headed back to its old home for one night only this Friday (May 17).

The Mediterranean restaurant, originally located in the sub-level of the hotel, was the hottest restaurant in the city until it closed in 2018. You could find everyone and anyone who’s into great food dining there. During its tenure, Sureño did fantastic brunches, collabs with other Beijing eateries, and even was a regular in our annual Cheesy Pizza Cup.

This Friday night, for the last time ever, the old guard of Sureño is coming back together for one last epic culinary trip down memory lane.

Taking command of the Sureño kitchen once more is Marino D’Antonio. D’Antonio, who now serves as Culinary Director of Giada Garden, is a legend in the Chinese F&B scene. He kicked things off at Sureño before moving on to roles at Opera Bombana and later Swire Hotels, for whom he served as executive chef in Shanghai and Beijing before finally moving on to his current role.

D’Antonio has prepared a four course meal with wine pairing option for the night, featuring special treats like his signature “mamma mia” handmade pasta.

One of the reasons Sureño was such a Beijing favorite back in the day was because of the team behind it, led expertly by restaurant manager Pieter Ham (now GM of East Beijing), who is also making a comeback for the evening. With Ham and D'Antonio both back, guests will hopefully get to experience what made Sureño great: fantastic food prepared with love and service that allows you to feel more like a close friend than a simple patron.

But here’s the downside. Just like back in its heyday, Sureño isn’t the largest venue in town. And given that such a blast from the past is being planned, it’s best to book as early as possible.

Sureño Night at Frasca is happening on Friday, May 17 and is RMB 588/person. For more information and bookings, call 010 6410 5210.
