When you say the fare for the subway "should" be distance based, why is that? Who benefits from that? The trains still travel the route, regardelss how far you go on them. Buses charge one fare no matter where you get off.
Furthermore, making all stops different prices means that buying tickets is going to be even more troublesome then now, and everytime someone buys the wrong ticket, there will be lines to fix it at the exit.
So it is more troublesome for everyone, more expensive when the government should be encouraging more subway use, and serving no benefit to reducing city traffic. A lose-lose situation all around. You want it to be like shanghais?-riding subways there can get pretty expensive.
That subway map looks outdated by 2+ years. And yes, fare system should be distance-based, just like several of the bus lines and all taxis already are. The powers-that-be should also see what demand would be for extended operating hours, to say 02:00, and attempt to provide more hours of operation. Several of the bus and subway lines stop around 23:00 which is far too early for a city with employmees and fun-seekers needing more reasonable ways of getting around town. It can be tough to find a taxi in many pockets of the city, even some of the busiest ones, at 22:00 in this town.
Honestly, I still think it's the fact that it made the news in such a big way... Otherwise it would be been like Brooklynnative--a token application of the law, but no further investigation.
But what's with "the investigation." I got pulled over, no motorcycle license, over the limit. They took me back to the precinct house, confiscated my license for six months, but actually let me drive my motorocycle away because I was so clearly not drunk and they were very nice about the whole thing. But at no time was there an investigation of what I'm doing here or questions asked as to my employment.
Ah. Well. That does make more sense than the illegal driving thing leading to deportation. When I went back and read the article more closely, I saw the reference to the working papers buried in there. I think it was the headline and then comments by other readers that made me assume it was directly linked to the incident with the lady, when I guess that was only the spark that fired off this whole messy chain of events.
He got deported because it made the news--and it first made the news by making the Chinese woman look bad. Now that it's clearly the foreigner's fault, "action must be taken" and "we must pay attention to the laws". This is all about "face".
that's not really the case
the punishment was meted out exactly to the letter of the law
From what I understand, he hit the lady, undisputed. There's no fine/punishment for that other than paying the hospital bills.
However he was driving without a drivers' license
And apparently on an unregistered vehicle
and during the investigation it was found that he was working without a work permit
it's the working without a permit that carries the deportation charge
Hmm... I commented on another article sometime ago about the recent downturn in TBJ's quality of writing (meaning writing style AND proofreading), and I was taken to task by "standards".
Standards, where are you? Who, if not you, will tell these posters to just stop reading TBJ if they're so bothered by the errors?

I am not evaluating the school. I am not working right now, you are not a client.
I am speaking under the topic of this current situation. The situation in which a school only cares about making money, ripping people off and scamming teachers. I said, that I am surprised the Rego situation doesn’t happen all the time considering the amount of fake schools here. Don't you have better things to do than follow people around on your website making snarky comments? In this situation, you are wrong. I know more about most schools in Beijing than you, I guarantee it.
We aren't talking about the experience of your child. There are kids at Rego who thought it was a great school too. I was referring to the fact that TFLH, as well as a big handful of schools in Beijing are 100% money-making factories. They either buy the international school label or use other names to get through licensing loopholes. Using "Learning House" is easier than using the word "school" in your title when it comes to establishing an educational business entity. Schools like this are owned by wealthy Chinese business people, not educators. They might look nice and fancy but when it comes down to it, the owners would rather buy a new BMW each year than hire experienced teachers. TFLH pays 14,000RMB on average to most of it’s foreign teachers. Beanstalk starts at 13 and Etonkids around 12,000RMB. Compare this to the real international school salaries of 30 to 50,000RMB a month plus benefits and it is pretty clear that the quality of teachers is not even in the same universe.
Just have a look at TFLH website, read the teacher bios. Here are some actual quotes:
“Has a BA in Business Administration” “Is a newcomer to kindergarten teaching” “He graduated with a Bachelor of Administration” “a bachelor’s degree in Business Studies” “a Bachelor’s degree in Biology” “a Master’s degree in Wildlife Management” “graduating from Canterbury Christ Church with a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration” “he joined a real estate company, which is where the base of his work experience has been”
These are not teachers, they are lost expats.
I’m sorry to have hit a nerve and mentioned a school that you clearly like. But there is nothing I am saying which is not true. Sorry, Michael, evaluating and recommending schools is a part of my job.
I find it very curious that this unlucky man has been deported. I have numerous friends who've been caught driving above the legal limit of .02 (but well below the American/European limit of .08), or driving an unregistered motorbike with no license. None of them were deported or faced deportation proceedings. Perhaps he was deported because of the illegal employment? That's fair enough, I imagine it would get you deported in most countries. But why did the police investigate? Because it had become a cause celbre? Because he wouldn't pay off the woman? I hope there is follow up, I'm very interested in this story.
(By the way, I don't give a rat's ass if there is a typo in my comment.)

Re: Foreigner on Motorbike Who Hit Lady to be Deported
This guy could be getting investigated by a private dick or two during his two weeks in prison
Two weeks in the big house for his dad too, thta's going to test parental love to the limit!
20k fine for their employers too, would be interesting to know what they were up to and who they were working for.

Re: How to Register Your Scooter in Beijing
In summer 2012, local police stations stopped issuing registrations for electric scooters. Are they issuing them again now?

Re: Teachers on Strike at British Rego School
whoa, JW, I stand corrected.
You've made it clear to me that the actual experience of the children and the parents aren't important in evaluating a school's quality.
It's the on-paper credentials and the level of cold, hard cash that expat teachers take home that shows me what a school's all about.
Now I know my daughter had a shitty time and a substandard education.
Thanks man, the veil has been lifted from my pitiful eyes after three years of being blinded by happy children and parents.
What a fool I've been. I just hope its not too late to save my poor child from the devastation of her preschool years.
Sounds if you don't take actual parent or child experiences into consideration when evaluating schools.
