Community Matters: Crazy and Single

Pizza, beer and a movie. Sounds like an awkward middle-school sleep over party. That’s until you throw some rowdy Irish men into the mix. Tonight, the lads from Irish Network China are inviting acclaimed film director, John Murray to screen his award-winning documentary Blood of the Irish at Nearby the Tree bar and restaurant in Sanlitun. Murray’s astounding two part documentary traces the roots of the Irish people, from the Kenyan Plains into the ice age, out of Spanish caves and beyond. The film is the product of some outstanding research from Trinity College Dublin and is specially designed to be had with a creamy stout and thin crust pie (we wish).

In nuttier news, this is the last week to get cheap tickets for the Austcham Mad Hatter’s Ball on March 9. They organizers have just announced that acclaimed vocalist Paulini, the star of Australian Idol, will be headlining the ball with a return performance by the Jackson Twinz and the antics of a young trio of acrobats from Beijing International Arts School. Tickets are selling for RMB 1000 until Saturday, after which they will cost RMB 1200. Before you buy them, highly consider Alice's wise words when she met the Mat Hadder, “But I don’t want to go among mad people."

Here’s a list of community events worth joining this week:

  • Learn to make Sushi from Hatsune’s Alan Wong. Tonight, for only RMB 300 he’ll have you slicing and dicing raw fish like a sushi samurai. Our new Dining Editor, Cat Nelson blogs more on that here.
  • Haze is throwing what sounds like quite an awesome party for meeting that special one Friday night. Colored bracelets and a ridiculous amount of free shots ensure you won’t stay single for long (how long before you’re single again may be another issue).
  • SnapAdventures is offering a weekend trip to Yu County where Spring Festival celebrations continue in grand carnival fashion. Parades of stilt-walkers, Daoist deities and a molten iron fireworks performance make this a unique tour worth joining.

We’re all going mad catching up on work after the holiday. You can try to stay sane or lose your mind watching these videos of Paulini and the Jackson Twinz.
