China, US Introduce New Ten-Year Visas For Business and Tourism

Some genuinely good news out of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting for citizens and residents of Beijing: China and the United States have agreed on a new ten-year visa plan for business and tourism, along with new five-year visas for students.

Although qualifying Chinese citizens could first obtain a five-year, multiple-entry tourist visa, which could then be renewed for a ten-year visa, the ten-year visa will now be immediately available for qualified candidates. Those new visas are available to the United States beginning today (Nov 11).

Similarly, the formerly one-year visas available to Chinese students and cultural exchanges will now be five years, eliminating a lot of hassle and paperwork for those involved. However, reciprocal visas should be available for American students.

The Beijinger will bring you more details on the new visas and how to apply for them as soon as the full information is available.

For now the policy seems to be aimed solely at tourist visas for Chinese going to the US and Americans visiting China - we'll see if it leads to any changes in Z visas in general, but I'm not holding my breath.
