Hike Through the War Tunnels and the Old Gold Mines

Beijing's rural areas are full of fascinating hidden sites that you could easily drive right past without noticing. One such place is the focus of this weekend Beijing Hikers trip, exploring an old system of tunnels buried beneath a village in Pinggu District. The tunnel system was built in the 1940s as part of a guerilla warfare strategy, and tunnels joined together many of the houses in the village with innumerable hidden entrances and exits. After exploring the tunnel network, the group will follow several of the old trails between villages and finish their hike at Gold Mountain Village, a small settlement named after the wildcat gold mines in the surrounding hills. Sep 22, 8am-afternoon. RMB 380, RMB 180 (children 6-12), book here. Depart from Liangmaqiao Subway
