Even More Vegetarian-and-Vegan-Friendly Restaurants in BJ Pt.1

We recently wrote about Beijing’s best vegetarian and vegan friendly Western restaurants and Beijing’s best vegetarian and vegan Chinese restaurants, but some of our readers had even more suggestions of places to go. So many, in fact, that we’ve decided to follow up with two more articles!

In this first part, we’re going to be looking at vegetarian and vegan friendly Mexican restaurants and burger restaurants. Then we’ll have a final article with some more Western and Chinese restaurants coming soon.

Mexican Restaurants

We already had a look at the amazing vegan and vegetarian food on offer at Q Mex Taqueria, but what about the offerings from a few other Mexican restaurants in the capital?

Las Musas

Las Musas already had a number of vegetarian and vegan dishes on their menu, but they've recently introduced six brand new vegetarian and vegan dishes as part of their seasonal menu. These include the Roasted Veggie Quesadilla (RMB 62), Veggie Enchiladas (RMB 58), and Amigo Vegano (RMB 65) and the great news is, they’ve decided to make the seasonal dishes permanent fixtures!

A personal new veggie favorite of ours, though, has to be their take on Jalapeño Poppers (RMB 40). These are instead full jalapeños stuffed with cream cheese deep fried until golden brown and served with a green chili ranch. They pack quite the punch! As well as the new dishes you can also enjoy some of their other classic dishes such as the vegan Tacos de Jamaica (RMB 50), Sloppy Vegan Torta (RMB 60), Veggie Monster Burrito (RMB 59) and more.

Pebbles Courtyard

Tucked away on Wudaoying Hutong, Pebbles have long been allies of the veggie community in Beijing. For vegans, they have a whole range of vegan tinga dishes including Vegan Tinga Enchilada (RMB 70), Vegan Tinga Burrito (RMB 75) and Vegan Tinga Tacos (RMB 55). Plus, they also have a vegan version of their Chorizo con Papa Tacos (RMB 60) which uses a plant-based chorizo.

For vegetarians, some dishes not to be missed are the Guac Attack Torta (RMB 60) which features deep-fried avocado, guacamole coleslaw, chipotle aioli, pickled chilies, black beans and cheese all sandwiched in between a soft roll and the Quesadilla (RMB 65), a cheese quesadilla with roasted and marinated bell peppers and onion topped with sour cream and pico de gallo.

Avocado Tree

Having opened way back in 2010, Avocado Tree has since taken the capital by storm with numerous branches now across Beijing. In recent years they’ve become more focused on healthy eating and part and parcel of this has seen them adding even more vegan and vegetarian dishes to their menu.

They now have a whopping 12 different vegetarian or vegan burritos, from long-time staples like the Avocado Burrito (RMB 40) to more unusual offerings like Green Tomatillos Salad Burritos (RMB 33-40) or Tofu Kale Superfood Burrito (RMB 34). Avocado Tree also have tons of different vegan and vegetarian bowl dishes if you’re looking for a more healthy option, as well as a selection of tacos and quesadillas.

Burger Restaurants

Here at the Beijinger, we love everything burger-related and that includes veggie and vegan burgers! So let’s take a look at what some of Beijing’s stalwart burger slingers have for those non-meat eaters among you.

Side Street

Side Street has two vegan burgers on their menu: the Beyond Meat Burger (RMB 88) and Hutong Hipster (RMB 55) and one vegetarian burger: Country Roads (RMB 65). The Hutong Hipster is a particular favorite of ours, with its spicy potato spinach patty, topped with red onion, tomato, lettuce and a smattering of green sauce and spicy and sour sauce.

Along with burgers they have the vegan Lentil Sambar Bowl (RMB 68) and vegetarian Sunny in the Middle Bowl (RMB 68), their take on shashuka, plus a range of great vegan and vegetarian appetizers like their famous Potato Fireballs (RMB 35) or Cauliflower Manchurian (RMB 45).

Slowboat

Slowboat recently launched a brand new vegetarian burger called the Veggin’ John Burger (RMB 52). It’s bursting with creole flavors and features a black-eyed pea fried veggie patty, spicy remoulade, battered fried okra, fiery horseradish slaw all served on a sweet brioche sesame bun. It can also be veganized with their in-house baked vegan bun and plant-based sauce. However please note it’s currently only available at their Sanlitun and Maizidian locations.

They also have their famed Dongsi Doufu Burger (RMB 50), which sees a crisp tofu patty layered with crunchy slaw and spicy sriracha-honey aioli, served on a brioche bun.

Aside from burgers, they have a variety of vegan and vegetarian salads and sides and for those with a sweet tooth, their decadent vegan dessert: County Fair Oreos (RMB 35) is not to be missed, with battered and deep-fried Oreos topped with seasonal fruit it hits all of the right spots. Last but by no means least, every week they do their Meatless Mondays deal where veg burgers and salads are buy one get one free with the purchase of any drink.

Jing A CBD Branch

At Jing A’s CBD branch, they’ve got three different vegetarian burgers up for grabs: Falafel Burger (RMB 70), CBD Beyond Meat Burger (RMB 125) and Stout Beyond Meat Burger (RMB 120). Our recommendation would be the Falafel Burger. It's a falafel patty smothered in marinara sauce, rocket, shredded cucumber, labneh and jalapeno relish all sandwiched in a sesame bun. You can also catch these burgers at some of Jing A’s other locations, but as the menus at each one differ it’s best to check ahead to see if they’re available at that specific location first. Other than burgers they have a few other vegan and vegetarian dishes like the Power Bowl (RMB 75), Avocado Hummus (RMB 70) or Mac ‘n Cheese (RMB 50).
