Eat Greek Without Getting Fleeced: Argo Restaurant
Themed on the ship of Golden Fleece legend, this Greek restaurant represents another stride in Wudaoying Hutong’s quest to become the next Nanluogu Xiang.
Their Mediterranean fare is technically sound, though the moussaka could use a bit more punch (RMB 60), and our sharing platter of baba ghanoush, tzatziki and hummus was crying out for some pita bread to mop it all up.
The bougiourdi (RMB 45) was much better; a rustic dish of feta, cheddar, tomato and peppers, baked until the top turns a bubbly golden brown. The owners have clearly parted with plenty of renminbi, and the place looks genuinely nice for it, with a lovely beamed interior, well-drilled wait staff, smart table settings and a kitchen captained by Greek chef Kipouros Ilias.
Daily 11.30am-11pm. 59 Wudaoying Hutong (100m west of Vineyard Cafe), Dongcheng District. (8403 9748) 东城区五道营胡同59号

A Sunny Friday Afternoon @ Argo Restaurant
I had nice quiet lunch one fine day in their upstairs room. The sun streamed through the long, South-facing windows. The side of humus, glass of house red, and the moussaka were excellent. Finished up with a shot of expresso as I fiddled on my iPad.
BTW - some humus comes with the main course, but I really was hungry for a lot more humus and so I ordered the side as a starter. They gave extra pita bread as it does come with only a few wedges.
Service was smooth and the only other table of Chinese gentlemen was far enough away that they just a nice backdrop of burble.
The only slight glitch was trying to get my bill when I was ready to go. I guess they decided to let me drift on my rare weekday afternoon free!
