Legend has it that they only made Tiananmen Square gigantic to keep the art students away from the tourists. And it still doesn't work.

It's wide enough that there's nowhere you can stand and see the whole square, not at ground level at least. Therefore, it's two squares (the word 'square' doesn't indicate equal sized sides, as you can see from the chart)

I beg to differ. Surely said building must reach from one side of the original square to the other before we can speak of it delineating the square into two smaller quadrilaterals (the chances of a square being halved and consequently forming two squares being highly improbable)?

You put up a building across the middle of a square, it stops being one square and starts being two. Sorry, Mao, you've ruined the stats.
Wenceslas square isn't a square either, just a fairly wide road that the Czechs have decided to call a square for some reason.
