EAT: Discover Austrian Biodynamic Wines, Last Chance for Oktoberfest, Get Bagels for Your Office
Hatchery Dongsi is turning one and they are celebrating with the launch of a new Hatchery favorites menu, available from 5pm on Tuesday, Oct 24. The offering will feature plenty of classics from Hatchery’s previous concepts including Mighty Mo’s Salty Seadog and the Mayan Bowl from Soul Bowls. In addition to these classics, seasonal dishes will be regularly developed by Hatchery head chef Simone Thompson. The new menu comes ahead of the launch of their new concept on Saturday, Oct 28 and will run alongside the new concept's menu once launched.
Wine buffs (or wine-buffs-in-training) will want to get down to Sureño this Friday, Oct 27, for their latest wine dinner, which this time features all biodynamic wines from Austria. You may have heard about biodynamic wine, but what on earth does biodynamic even mean and how does it impact your favorite bottle of vino? Now's your time to find out. Biodynamic farming originated in Austria around the turn of the 20th century, so naturally, the wine-making tradition in the mountainous European country has been heavily influenced by biodynamic principles. Enjoy canapés and glass of crisp Wieninger Vienna Hills Grüner Veltliner – a wine that typifies the style of this most commonly grown indigenous variety – before sitting down to a four-course menu from Sureño's chef de cuisine Talib Hudda, paired with five different Austrian wines. Dinner is priced at RMB 588 per person, a good price for what is sure to be a fun evening.
This weekend is your last chance to enjoy the Kempinski's annual Oktoberfest celebration at Paulaner Brauhaus. On Sunday, Oct 29, they will be holding their last Oktoberfest brunch, which is a steal at RMB 428 for all-you-can-eat Bavarian-style food and all-you-can-drink specially-brewed Oktoberfest beer (beer-free option with free-flow soft drinks available for RMB 290). Your editor went by a couple of weekends ago and can attest that the brunch is a thoroughly good time; in addition to excellent food (maybe don't bring your vegetarian friends, this is a meat-heavy – specifically pork-heavy – meal), there is a live band and frequent traditional German dance performances which will get even the most cynical of diners clapping along.
Finally, if you want to be the most popular person in your office, be sure to order our favorite delivery-only bakery The Bake Shop's new bagel packs for your next breakfast/lunch meeting. For RMB 235 (plus delivery fee, usually around RMB 20 depending on where your office is) you'll get 12 bagels, a hulking pack of cream cheese, and 150g of their home-cured salmon, plus trimmings such as red onions and lemon wedges. Now all you need to sort out is the coffee. Note that you'll need to order 48 hours in advance. Add "thebakeshop" on WeChat to order.
