EAT: Louisiana Dining at One East, Fujian Menu at Jing Yaa Tang, Murder Mystery Dinner

EAT: Your bite-sized guide to the best eats to be had in Beijing this week.

One East launches Louisiana Menu

One East at the Hilton Beijing has reponed after closing during the pandemic, and they're coming back with a whole new style that builds off of their deep roots in the city. When the restaurant first opened in the early 1990's, it was called Louisiana and served Cajun-style cuisine. After digging up some old menu items, they've decided to bring back that old Louisiana taste with a new Cajun menu, printed on leather no less!

You'll find no shortage of shrimp and prawns in the pickings, including in the seafood gumbo soup (RMB 79) with prawn, snapper, mussel, crab, and okra, as well as the seafood jambalaya rice (RMB 168) with mussel, scallop, shrimp, squid, sausage, and vegetable. For a real Louisiana community dining-style feel, the boiled crayfish pot comes (RMB 138) comes with baby corn, hot dog, potato, mushrooms, and green beans. Of-age diners can finish the meal off with a Louisinna mud cake with Oreo crust and Kahlua ice cream.

At the same time, the restaurant has launched a separate sharing menu. "As we reopen, we wanted to take things in a different direction, offering a more shareable menu at a more competitive price point, "Oliver Schwartz, communication director for the hotel, tells the Beijinger.

The a la carte menu offers are the seafood prawn platter, twice-cooked barbecued ribs, and mini lobster burgers topped with Bearnaise sauce. Another alcoholic dessert on this menu takes the form of the baked Alaska, a classic dish in a martini glass comprised of ice cream, marangue, and flaming brandy.

A taste of Fujian at Jing Yaa Tang

For Jing Yaa Tang’s latest limited-edition regional Chinese menu, Chef Li Dong visited four regions of Fujian, exploring the province’s diverse cuisine. The dishes he brought back include mixed seaweed and pinenuts with vinaigrette soy sauce from Xiamen; oyster omelet with Fujian-style chili sauce from Quanzhou; and Fuzhou’s famous lychee pork, so-called because the pork resembles lychees in the finished dish, which he gave an alternative spin featuring pork neck instead of pork belly and marinating it in fermented red rice. He also traveled to the Wuyi mountains, exploring ingredients like wild mushrooms and the regions prized tea. Jing Yaa Tang is currently offering a Fujian tasting menu, paired with fine Fujian teas, for RMB 688 per person. Find more details and purchase via this WeChat post.
