Tex-Mex in the Hutong: Sand Pebbles Lounge

Rapidly maturing Wudaoying Hutong opens yet another restaurant. Sand Pebbles Lounge, still wet behind the ears, must contend with nearby Vineyard Café’s reliable and easy classics. Is Wudaoying big enough for both players?

Billing itself as Tex-Mex, Sand Pebbles earnestly delivers up the usual suspects with attentive service. The quesadillas (RMB 45) have only a thin slick of cheese but are paired with a lush tangle of peppers and onions. The chicken fajitas (RMB 68) were generous but a bit dry, and the accompanying rice and beans underseasoned.

It’s the off-topic menu items that will bring you back: perfectly fried fish and chips (RMB 40) and South African Kalahari boerewors sausages (RMB 68). Paired with creamy mash and a peppery salad, the aromatic house-made bangers are a satisfying one-course dinner.

Those who climb up past the second floor’s plush sofas to the rooftop terrace will be rewarded with a striking view of surrounding hutongs.

I think Coach muct be a competitor or something. The food is very authentic, American Mexican style food, and very reasonably priced. And what the heck is 2001 style interior? Its a different era?

If you like tacos and burritos, it is some of the best Mexican in Beijing, in a cozy little place.
