Thousands of taxi rides are safely completed each day. Fatalaties occur when drivers are well rested, too. And because the original China Daily article doesn't state whether the driver was suffering from fatigue or not, it's pure speculation. It's entirely possible this driver was properly rested, or the accident was not the fault of his own. Maybe the fault was that of the passengers, eh? Designated Drinker is right...it's unlikely the driver or passengers were wearing safety belts. If they had been, from the looks of this accident, I would be very surprised if any deaths would have resulted. It's a reminder to BUCKLE UP!

@author: first 4 km? Thought it was first 3 km...

I have traveled to so many countries but no where else that I have been to is it common for people to cross a street without first looking. I know that cars in China are a relatively new phenomenon but you would think most people wouldn't have wanted to get hit by bicycles either. The only explanation I can think of is that the Chinese are an incredibly optimistic people and just have faith that when they cross the road there won't be any traffic heading in either direction. However, even that explanation fails to account for why people here often look in the WRONG direction and then cross.
I have found out why slow drivers drive in the left lane which drives me insane. It's because that lane is perceived as safer as fewer cars are crossing into and out of it. The police have to start enforcing the minimum speed laws on the highway. If you're going 60 in the fast lane it's extremely dangerous because it makes all the other drivers need to change lanes.

Looking at the accident I'm really surprised three people died. I would have thought some serious injuries, maybe the front passenger dies, but three people - were they all in the taxi? Do they have airbags? If the taxi had airbags I cannot understand how that kind of damage results in three fatalities. Terrible tragedy.

I've been in cabs driven by sleepy drivers twice out of the last 5 or so times I've taken a cab ... passengers should be well aware of the alertness of their driver, for their own safety

Anywhere in the world, taxi drivers are the most dangerous drivers.... For a Beijing people, I think the salary of 4600 rmb is low, but not as low as to cannot live for one person, but if they have family is not enough. Anyway, for this, they should not up the price , because it is already expensive than the other cities and they are not paid at commission ....

Where ARE the picnic spots ? This article seems nothing more than simply bar hopping and getting some food and taking it...where? And seriously, lug around growlers? A good option for drinking at home, but most folks I know don't want to slug around a heavy bottle which they spent a substantial sum on. They'd prefer to pick up cans or bottles and simply dispose of them in the park rubbish bin as they wind up their day. And if cash is an issue, skip Trouble and save about 30% getting the exact same bottled beer at Heaven Supermarket, roughly 1 1/2 blocks north of Gongti Bei Lu on Xindong Lu. Or Happy Beer House, just north of the stadium, although they don't have local options.

If Beijing has nearly 200,000 individuals in this wealth bracket, then this means in all of China there would be close to one million who fall into this bracket. And according to this article 64% of them are planning on leaving the country? 640,000? Pray tell, where in the world did they get this information? They surveyed a million of these people and asked them?

That's ludicrous.

As to my observation, the majority of rich Chinese persons would love to live in China. They do not want to move out of China.

It's not just to raise awareness of ALS. Its main goal is to raise money for the research, and they've raised over $42 million.

I think it started as send $10 if you dumped the ice and $100 if you don't want to dump the ice on yourself.

So my question is did the guys/restaurants all send money?
