2008 Apr 01 Celine Dion's Beijing Show Cancelled
We've been hearing rumors for a while now that Celine Dion's Beijing show was in question and the fact that, as of last week, Emma ticketing were claiming that "technical difficulties" made it impossible for them to sell tickets to the event, made us even more skeptical. Today comes the announcement that Celine Dion's Beijing show, that was to take place on April 13 at Gongti, has been postponed and in all likelihood canceled.
According to Emma's announcement, the Beijing show has been postponed but her Shanghai concert will go ahead as planned on April 11. However, given the fact that she has already canceled some of her Australian dates, it seems unlikely that the singer will perform in Beijing.
Although it's easy to assume that the cancellation is directly linked to the controversy associated with February's Bjork concert in Shanghai and the subsequent tightening of regulations covering performances by foreign artists, the fact that Celine Dion has also had cancel some of her Australian shows suggests that the 40 year-old singer's voice might just not be up to the task of completing her first world tour in ten years. According to her official website: "Celine has been suffering from a respiratory tract infection, which has caused bronchial and laryngeal inflammation." The Beijing News reports that her husband Rene Angelil received medical advice saying that Dion should avoid singing outdoors, particularly in a city like Beijing where the sandy conditions could further damage her throat.
Emma have posted an announcement on their website that gives details as to how ticket holders can obtain refunds.

How To Get Wired at Beijing's Tea District

Flick through any guidebook to Beijing, and you're unlikely to find Maliandao, Beijing's tea district, listed in the must-sees. It's a wholesale area for one (look at the photo) - not exactly wispy-bearded old men weighing out bunches of priceless dahongpao in back alleys. It's also in south-west Beijing. Where? Exactly. Nevertheless, Maliandao is a must for any Beijingers wanting to take the next bold step beyond Jasmine tea, Lipton with milk and that pot of pu'er you had at the dim-sum buffet.
Extra Extra! Oasis China Concerts Canceled!

Cry yourselves a river, because over the weekend it was announced that both Beijing and Shanghai Oasis concerts have been canceled indefinitely. Ticket sales for the April 3 and 5 shows were put to a halt on Feb 28, according to Jinghua.cn, and tickets which have already been sold will be refunded.
Reasons for the cancelation are still TBD, but rumors have it that it had something to do with an "internal company issue."
For details on how to get a refund for your tickets, stay tuned to www.emma.cn. And keep on The Beijinger blog for our pre-cancelation interview with the band!

Review: José González at Yugong Yishan

Jose Gonzalez
RMB 150.
8pm. Yugong Yishan (6404 2711)Last night’s snow didn’t stop hundreds of Beijingers from heading over to Yugong Yishan to catch Swedish indie icon, José González. The crowd paid little attention to the soothing melodies of the acoustic guitar/harmonica playing opener, Wu Zhuoling, choosing instead to catch up with one another over a drink in anticipation of the main act. However, the crowd hushed in expectant silence as the lights dimmed and Gonzalez - who proved not to be a big fan of on stage chit chat, saying very little throughout the show aside from the occasional polite xie xie - dove right into his first song.
