2009 Mar 27 China Fashion Week: Far East Is Far Out

China International Fashion Week 2009/2010 autumn/winter series opened in Beijing yesterday. One of the opening events of the event, the Hempel Award, attracted a fresh crop of young designers from 18 countries and regions to flaunt their designs yesterday.
Unlike the Spring Summer Collection of last year, there's little in the way of over-the-top garments on show. Most dresses flapping down the runway are one-piece numbers, featuring straight cuts, cold and simple colors - giving expression to the show's slogan: "simple is best".

More than 40 fashion shows will be staged in Beijing over the next week, including those organized by Notting Hill Men's Fashion, Edenbo Business Casual Men's Wear, Lea Seong, Septwolves and Judy Galaxy.

Launch Party: Fashion @ Fez
Last night in Ch'ien Men 23, a group of fashion-forward people looking for a good time gathered on the Moroccan tented-terrace of Fez for the opening night of the Fez Bar Fashion Series.
The drinks were flowing courtesy of Fez's world-famous barman Jackie Ho and his boys, and attendees were decked out to the nines. Beijing-designer Lu Liu presented her 12.28 line, a show segmented by season and complete with blowing bubbles, skull brides, and a little (risque) nudity.Dior Show Review

I won't lie I’m not big on Dior. Prior to visiting the Dior show at Ullens my experience with the brand was limited to a bright orange knock-off t-shirt I bought on the street that had a black power fist on it and happened to read, “Dior Not War.”
Being a human who lacks the ability to match clothing, I did not expect to understand or appreciate the Dior show, so I was surprised to find that it impressed me greatly. The show mixes original Dior dresses from the 1940s up to present, some of them so old they are falling apart, together with works of art inspired by Dior done by 22 different Chinese artists.

The autumn and winter collections were revealed in March this year.

As we gear up for the Olympics, more new buildings and lavish venues are rushing to take advantage of the global attention that the games will focus on Beijing – although it seems not all of them are going to make the August deadline. After a hastily arranged art opening back in May, the Legation Quarter revealed a more composed and ready-to-meet-the-world version of itself late last month when it invited Beijing's glitterati around for the unveiling of Shanghai Tang's 2008 Autumn Winter collection. Over 400 people, including film star Zhou Xun, American director Andy Tennant and photo artist Xiao Huiwang attended what was the label's first international event in Beijing.
