2009 Sep 14 This Party Keeps Getting Better! More Oct 1 Closures

If you were thinking of doing something other than watching TV over the National Day break, you can strike the Legation Quarter off your list.
Management tell us the entire Legation Quarter has been ordered to shut down from Wednesday, September 30 until Friday, October 2. At this stage venues in the area will reopen on Saturday, October 3. The Legation folks stress, however, these dates may be subject to change and they could be forced to close for a longer period.
The newly-opened Capital M in Qianmen will also be closing from September 28 to October 4.
As we noted earlier, businesses inside the North Gate of the Workers' Stadium will also be shut, though the exact timing still seems uncertain. Beijing Boyce reported today that the popular pizza joint Kro's Nest will be closed from September 15 to October 2.
Incidentally, a friend of the beijinger who lives along Chang’an Avenue has told us residents in his building have had the following restrictions placed on them:
-No guests between 31 September and 2 October.
-Residents without a special permit are not permitted to enter the parade zone even if they live there.
-Windows are not allowed to be opened for the parade or parade rehearsals. Just to be certain, building management has collected all window keys.
-Metal detectors and x-ray machines have been installed in the lobby. Even groceries need to be x-rayed.
-Guests leaving an apartment in the days leading up to the parade need to have it inspected by the PSB before they can depart.
-Gatherings of 10 or more people must be approved by the PSB in advance.
Guess you can’t be too careful, even at a time when everyone will be so unquestionably happy.

There’s been a string of bar and restaurant closures around town of late, at least some of which are related to the impending celebrations to mark 60 years of the PRC.Open No More: Wokai Shutting Down Indefinitely

Just a few hours ago, Wokai announced that it will be concluding operations indefinitely. The microfinance nonprofit previously had the full confidence of the local community, having raised over half a million dollars in loan capital, garnered a network of thousands of investors and been featured by several major media (including CNN, Bloomberg and MSNBC). The shutdown has come as quite a shock to many, who last heard that the organization was simply seeking a new CEO.
Mos Def-initely Not Coming to Beijing

We’ve received confirmation from organizers that US hip-hop star Yasiin Bey (or the artist formerly known as Mos Def) will not be performing at this weekend’s MIDI Festival as he had been scheduled to on Monday (April 30). The reason is unclear so far - feel free to speculate away in the comments space below - but we'll update you if we're able to get more comment from the organizers.

The Ship Has Sailed: Bon Voyage to ShopWeShip.com

Expats who rely on the material comforts of home may be disheartened to hear that ShopWeShip.com, previously known as Dong-Xi.com, has just announced that it will soon be discontinuing its services.
ShopWeShip.com was first established to give Chinese residents access to e-commerce sites that only shipped to US billing addresses. Back then, our options were few – we could hardly find quality Western food around town, let alone chic clothes from mid- to high-end retailers.

That's not bad though. Whenever I buy groceries at the Sanyuanli market I run them through the x ray machine several times before I get on the subway. Irradiated meat and produce stay fresher longer.

No guests between 31 September and 2 October.
Wow they've invented a whole new day specially to celebrate 60 glorious years! Is there nothing the CCP can't do! Or am i wrong in thinking "30 days have September, April, June and November....

While I don't doubt they could invent a whole new day if they wanted to, this was unfortunately a typo on my part. Should read September 30, not 31. My Apologies.

It is a real pain with film too. Bring it out for inspection and they are all confused. Put it in a lead lined bag and then they get alerted.
Try to explain to them what Infra Red film or film pushing is or cumulative exposure and they get even more confused.
Eventually you get your way - just have to be cooperative and not some arrogant "I know better" foreigner prick.
