2009 Sep 21 Celebrate Now - Jet Fighters Over Beijing

While we've all been told not to look outside during preparations for the October 1 National Day parade, the sound of jet fighters screaming over the beijinger office this morning was enough to send a gaggle of staff to the windows in excitement.
After all, the sight of a lone chopper over the capital is rare given the aerial exclusion zone over central Beijing, let alone squadrons of jet fighters and formations of attack helicopters swooping in low over the skyscrapers. All very Apocalypse Now... with less jungle.
The formations were coming in from the east, flying just south of and parallel to Chang'an Avenue, over Tiananmen and then out to the west. The fly-by lasted for about 15 minutes and climaxed with jets releasing streaks of colored smoke.
This is what we could see from the beijinger office window down on Jianguomenwai Dajie, east of Tiananmen Square.

Weekend Nightlife: Fatboy on Great Wall

No doubting where the biggest party of this weekend is – it’s the much anticipated Great Wall Music Festival featuring ‘90s UK dance legend Fatboy Slim out near Badaling. I’d bet on a crowd-pleasing set of dance floor classics, with a healthy dose of Fatboy’s own best-known tracks (hopefully not anything he produced after about 2000, though). Let's get one thing straight: The party's not on the Wall, just beside a section of it, though you can go for a walk up during the day if you're so inclined.
Shunyi Rocks! Rynostock This Saturday
This weekend’s music festival takes the stage out in Shunyi. Rynostock, a charity rock festival, plays all day Saturday at Pomme O’Shea’s - and unlike other recent festivals, beer and other drinks are guaranteed to be flowing in abundance.INTRO 2011: Win Tickets! Plus All the Info You Need

The biggest event of the year in electronic music is upon us this weekend, with the third INTRO festival taking place amid the chimneys and industrial-chic of 751 D-Park in 798 this Saturday and Sunday (May 21-22). Organized by local label and DJ team Acupuncture Records, this is the biggest INTRO yet - 2009 and 2010 were only one-day events - and all going well this year should once again raise the bar and set a new standard for electronic music festivals in China. Catch up with our coverage so far here, here and here. And enter our ticket competition now!
London Calling: Hard Rock Cafe Competition

The Hard Rock Calling festival kicks off June 24, celebrating Hard Rock Cafe's 40th anniversary this year. An all-star lineup includes The Killers, Bon Jovi and Stevie Nicks. And it's in London. Why should we care? Because Hard Rock Beijing is giving you a chance to win a free trip to the festival.
Clubhouse: Josh Wink To Play INTRO 2011
UPDATE: In a change to the original plan, organizers Acupuncture Records have announced that May 21-22's INTRO 2011 electronic music festival has been moved to 751 D-Park in 798 Art District - the event will not take place at Tongzhou Canal Park as previously advertised.Philadelphia’s Josh Wink was at the forefront of the early ’90s rave scene in the US, melting dance floors and scoring hits with tracks like “Higher State of Consciousness.” Two decades on, Wink brings his record bag for a headline set at the biggest weekend on Beijing’s electronic music calendar, INTRO 2011, which takes place May 21-22 at 751 D-Park in 798 Art District (moved from originally planned Tongzhou Canal Park). We warmed Wink up for Beijing by asking him about Star Wars, Radiohead and his shifting perception of the humble banana.

Really? We were told not to look out windows?
What about going outside? Can we do that? This is a great way to skip work.
Look forward to working with you.

Treasonous behaviour. Not only looking out the window, but photographing the jets as well.

Looking out windows definitely frowned upon - see last week's posts.

I arrive into Beijing from Shanghai the morning of Oct. 1st, around 11am, and I'm staying through the morning of the 5th. Will anything be open during this time? What will I be allowed to do on the 1st? I'm staying on the south part of Wangfujing.

Re: Celebrate Now - Jet Fighters Over Beijing
Hi Texan1,
Obtaining precise information is always difficult, but I think it's a pretty safe bet that very little, if anything, will be open around Wangfujing on the day of Oct 1. You may also have difficulty getting to your hotel, as roads in the area will either be shut or heavily restricted. You could try calling your hotel and seeing if they have been given any more detailed information.

Re: Celebrate Now - Jet Fighters Over Beijing
Lovely. I hope enough touristy stuff will be open starting on the 2nd. I wish I had found out about the big party before making my reservations, I would have swapped Beijing with Hong Kong or something.
I read in another post that morning flights from Shanghai into Beijing on the 1st were cancelled. I'm supposed to arrive at 11am, and I haven't seen anything on Hainan Airline's web page. I guess I'll cross my fingers and prepare to wait at the airport in case something does come up.
Sent the hotel an email, I'll see what comes up.

Texan1 - if you can manage, I'd suggest postponing your arrival by one day and getting in on the 2nd. The 1st is going to be pretty hectic with restrictions and disruptions galore. Good luck!

I keep getting "Access Denied, You are not authorized to access this page" when I try to look at that article. I've seen other articles mentioning the airport closure for 3 hours in the morning, but none (so far) mentioning total closure. Guess I'll bring some movies to watch in the airport, waiting for my plane to be cleared to take off.

Try again, Tex - the article should be back up. Not sure why it was not appearing this morning, but it's back now.

Re: Celebrate Now - Jet Fighters Over Beijing
Ah, yes, I read the Global Times article. I was afraid the article would say that they were going to close the airport the whole day. My flight from Shanghai leaves 9:05am, and the stories are saying all flights between 7:00 and 9:00 are delayed or cancelled. I just hope that the people on those flights don't bump me off my flight.
Can't change my flight, either. It's all part of the experience, I won't be the first person stuck in an airport for hours.

Re: Celebrate Now - Jet Fighters Over Beijing
i want to see the parade and not just from my window, which would be impossible anyway cus i'm on the ground floor but any chance 'commoners' can get to see it? such a shame they don't allow the public to buy tickets to attend the parade, i think it'll be an awesome event.
