Chicken Soup for the Neutrophil
With winter looming its time to break out the long johns, dust off your jumpers and get ready for the big chill. Inevitably, with the chill comes the risk of colds… and those chicken soup cures beloved by our grandmothers. But can chicken soup really help cure colds?
The answer, it seems, is yes - or at least help relieve the symptoms, according to our resident health expert Dr Richard. There is some evidence that chicken soup slows down “neutrophil activity,” the cells that “fight infections and inflammation.” The result is reduced congestion in our nasal passages.
Dr Richard explains; “chicken soup seems to have anti-inflammatory activity, which theoretically may help decrease the symptoms of colds and flu.” The doctor also helpfully provides a link to a chicken soup recipe.
So if you’re feeling sniffly, buy some chicken bones and get that water boiling.
