Trainspotting in Fangjia 46

There’s a lot to like about this trendy concept restaurant in Fangjia 46. Artful design brings the outdoors indoors with floor-to-ceiling windows and leafy plants inside open glass partitions.

The southwest Chinese cooking is equally contemporary; our nuomi tangyuan (RMB 12) topped balls of sweet glutinous rice with a savory counterpoint of chilli and sauerkraut, and the xi’nan tudou ni (RMB 18) came with a heap of potato chips intended for scooping up the spicy mashed potato. Despite the occasional mayonnaise-daubed fruit garnish, the food generally maintains substance over style. But stick to the simpler dishes like beef rice noodle soup (RMB 18) or broad bean and tomato stew (RMB 22), and you can’t go wrong.

Daily 11am-10pm. 46 Fangjia Hutong (south of Guozijian Jie), Dongcheng District. (6400 1725) 猜火车, 东城区方家胡同46号艺术园区 (国子监南临)
