2009 Dec 23 Infected Mushroom write Chinese School Essays and Win tickets to the Show!

If you’ve been living in the trance sphere, there’s no need to describe the brilliance of Erez Aizen and Amit “Duvdev” Duvedevani, or better known as Infected Mushroom (http://www.myspace.com/infectedmushroomcentral). After their last Beijing show in May, the Israeli producers, DJs or even rock stars - whatever you prefer to call them - are back in town on Christmas Eve.

Currently living in Los Angeles, these electronic inventors released their ninth album Legend of the Black Shawarma this year. The duo has expanded their team into a five-man band and will perform their full live set at the upcoming Beijing show – for once, we are lucky to be Bejingers!

Infected Mushroom write Chinese School Essays

They might be brilliant DJ and producers, but we’d like to challenge them on writing Chinese elementary school essays (designed for children age 7-12), you know, to feel good about ourselves.

We’ve been through it, so take that mushrooms!

TITLE 1: I’ve got rid of the bad habits. (我改掉了坏习惯)
Erez: I got rid of the habit of keeping my hair tame…
Duvdev: I was a 2 pack per day smoker – so yes, that nonsense is over and done with – thanks goodness…

TITLE 2: I’ve always wanted to be a … (我的理想)
Erez: Zookeeper.
Duvdev: Comedian – because I’m funny looking, not because I’m funny!

TITLE 3: An Unforgettable Day(s) (难忘的一天)
Erez: The days my children were born (that’s why the ‘s’ was added after ‘Day’).
Duvdev: The day my child was born.

TITLE 4: Thoughts After Reading a Book (……读后感)
Infected Mushroom choose The Mall Directory
Erez: Which way to the tech store?
Duvdev: How do I find the food court?

TITLE 5: Thoughts After Watching a Movie (……观后感)
Infected Mushroom choose The Lord of the Rings
Erez: If Frodo had an iPhone, he could just use Navigation to Mordor…simple.
Duvdev: If we dye Erez’s hair blonde, he would look like an Elf…

TITLE 6: What’s this picture about? (看图说话)

Infected Mushroom: This picture clearly shows the village drunk leaving the bar with a broom handle to protect himself from the local children who hide just behind the door waiting to ambush him.

These days, there are almost too many food options in town. There are French cheeses and South African wines as well as Iberico hams and tuna flown in, daily, from Tokyo’s famous Tsukiji market. It’s enough to make you forget you live in Beijing. But wait – you do live in Beijing. When was the last time you thought about local free-range chickens? Or bought the in-season fruit from local markets and not imported mangos from Jenny Lou’s?

Hong Kong-based DJ Yeodie has played top clubs from Tokyo to New York and back in a career that’s included dropping beats for Mick Jagger, Korean pop sensation Rain and Macau casino magnate Stanley Ho – though probably not all at the same time, we think. He even tested his acting skills with an appearance as “tennis player” in Aussie teen soap Home & Away.

  • Art from the Shadows: Execution of the Judge of Hell

My experiences with puppets have consisted mainly of whatever Jim Henson offered me as a child, whether it was green banjo-playing frogs to David Bowie’s cuddly, diabolical friends in Labyrinth. No, this month the Beijing stage will instead be welcoming performances courtesy of shadow puppets. Yep, that's right, we’ll be seeing the return of The Execution of the Judge of Hell, the brainchild of 26-year-old French director, Sarah Oppenheim, and brought to fruition with the talents of the Han Feizi Shadow Puppet Company and classically trained Beijing Opera performers. Produced last year for the first time as part of the 2009 Croisements Festival, it’s back and according to Oppenheim, full of beautiful albeit barely perceptible variations on last year’s show. Here's what Oppenheim had to say.
