2010 Mar 19 Bartender of the Year Leaves Q Bar
George Zhou, who you voted "Best Bartender" in the Beijinger's 2009 Reader Bar & Club Awards, has left Q Bar, the massively acclaimed bar he created with long-time sidekick Echo Sun. A press release we received from Q Bar this morning states:
"Beijing's leading cocktail lounge, Q Bar announces today a restructuring of its ownership. Since opening at the top of the Eastern Inn in Sanlitun South Street in 2006, Q Bar has established a solid reputation as one of Beijing's best nightspots with its imaginitive drinks menu, bar food and a spectacular rooftop terrace. Ralph Ziegenhorn and Echo Sun, two of the original partners at Q Bar have now taken over the share of George Zhou, the third original partner. The move is an amicable parting of the ways based on differing views of the future of the company and the partners' management styles, and marks Ralph and Echo's commitment to the ongoing development of the Q Bar brand and offering.
The two partners assure loyal patrons that it will be business as usual at Q Bar; we will continue to serve the same imaginative, high quality drinks and bar food to a soundtrack of hip lounge music including funk and electronica, and with the summer fast approaching, Q Bar's extraordinary roof terrace will soon be coming into its own as the premier outdoor lounge space in Beijing. Details of our forthcoming events and ongoing developments will be available online at www.qbarbeijing.com"
Echo Sun and principal investor Ralph Ziegenhorn will soldier on with Q Bar, whcih was named "Outstanding Bar of the Year" in last year's voting. It appears Echo and George had differences of operating philospohy that came to a head when the opportunity arose for the Q Bar team to invest in Houhai watering hole Obiwan, which Echo endorsed and George resisted. When Echo went ahead and took a stake in Obiwan despite an agreement between Q Bar's prinicipal investors that none would get involved with other bars unless all parties consented, things started to fall apart. Finally, this week an agreement was reached to pay out George for his 1/3 stake.
As one of Beijing's top drink mixers, George should be hot property. That's if he doesn't decide to branch out on his own, which he's rumored to be strongly cosidering.
More on this story at Beijing Boyce, who broke the story late last night. A comment is expected from George Zhou later today.

Former Q Bar man George Zhou - voted "Bartender of the Year" by the Beijinger's readers in 2009 - is back with George's, his new cocktail bar. The official opening party is tomorrow night (June 25), but the bar's been doing business since last Saturday night, when we stopped by for a look. Just 20m round the Workers' Stadium from Chad Lager's Fubar, George's is a low-lit lounge featuring the martinis, mojitos and other cocktails that Zhou made his name with at Q Bar, as well as simpler options like Tsingtao at RMB 15 and basic mixed drinks from RMB 30. You know that care's going to be taken with your drinks here, so take a seat and enjoy yourself.Obiwan Solo: Q Bar Withdraws From Partnership

Avid followers of bar and club news will remember that part of the back story to former Beijinger Bartender of the Year award winner George Zhou's departure from Q Bar related to partners Ralph Ziegenhorn and Echo Sun taking the decision to invest in Xihai bar Obiwan. At the time, the Q Bar connection - with drinks including absinthe cocktails created by Echo, and music programming overseen by former Panjir guitarist and long-term Q Bar resident DJ David Mitchell - seemed set to bring a new lease of life to Obiwan.
Talking Pints: YEN White, George Leaves Q Bar, Rickshaw Rented
First of all, news on a massive party that only came out after our March issue went to print. The next YEN White party has been set for next Friday, March 26 at The Star Live. YEN regulars like Mickey Zhang, Patrick Yu and Blackie will be playing. Limited discount advance tickets are available from Lush or at ClubZone and cost RMB 50, regular advance tickets are available at RMB 80 from ClubZone, and tickets on the night are RMB 150 (including one drink).Talking Pints: Corn vodka, weekend roundup, and crisis at Q Bar?
A month after the Rickshaw's demise (reported here), clouds appear to be gathering around another of Beijing's favorite bars of recent years. Beijing Boyce reports here on Q Bar's one-day closure earlier this week, citing tension among the management. As the sun comes up again over Beijing, plenty of us will be looking forward to occupying Q Bar's terrace for a drink - let's hope we'll get the chance. Boyce also notes that Blue Frog's terrace has reopened already. Hmm. I'm as big a fan of happy hour drinks on the Frog's terrace as anyone, but given the icy winds this morning, I'd say they're just a little too eager to start reaping the rewards.
