Daniel Bell: Minimal Techno, the Detroit Way

Detroit minimal techno pioneer Daniel Bell is the man behind the influential Accelerate, Elevate and Seventh City record labels. After a brief hiatus from producing, and a move to Germany, he’s resumed a busy DJing schedule. Originally set to play at Alpha, his performance in Beijing has just been moved to Yugong Yishan on Friday, July 23. Bell sat down with us for 60 seconds of interrogation.

You used to perform under the name “DBX.” What does that name stand for?

Daniel Bell eXperiments.

Who are you now – DBX or Daniel Bell?

Both.

You were born in California, lived in Canada, and are very much associated with Detroit’s electronic scene. How did you end up moving to Germany?

I was looking for a change and always thought it would be interesting to live in Europe since I travel there so often.

If Berlin is the techno capital of the world, who’s President?

Nobody, I hope.

For readers who don’t get it, sum up minimal techno in three words:

I don't know.

You've started up quite a few record labels. Why? Isn’t one enough?

Each label has a different sound: Accelerate was more “tracky house”, Elevate leaned towards deep house, and 7th City is an extension of 7th City Distribution and is more focused on Detroit style techno.

What else are you up to right now?

This week I’m finishing a track for a new Perlon Records compilation.

You’re best known for your track “Losing Control.” What’s your preferred way of losing control?

On the dance floor, lost in music.

And how do you regain control?

Good question.

Lose control with Daniel Bell on Friday, July 23 at Yugong Yishan starting at 10pm. Tickets are 60 RMB at the door.
