Forensic Investigations with DJ JCC

She was born in Sichuan, lives and studies in Guangzhou, and is perhaps the brainiest DJ in China. Beijing welcomes DJ JCC of drum & bass crew Trilithium to Beijing this weekend. Here's what she had to say to us ahead of her trip.

We hear you’ve got a degree in forensics. Who killed vinyl then?
This vinyl case is a pending case…

Give us a one-minute forensics lecture.
Always shake hands with the cadaver and try to make friends with him/her at the crime scene, then you will find more evidence.

I read you were studying for a PhD in neuroscience too. Have you finished yet? Has drum & bass taught you anything about the human brain?
Not yet. It is a 5 –year programmem and I am really enjoying it. What I’ve been doing research on is extremely intriguing. Drum&bass has taught me too much about the human brain. Briefly, I believe dnb up-regulates the release of glutamate which is an excitatory neurontransmitter in the central nervous system. Music definitely affects the releases of those chemicals in the brain. I can talk about this forever, but it will certainly bore or even annoy the readers.

Forensics, neuroscience and drum & bass – there’s a kind of intensity about all of these things, a dark side. (They’re certainly not for squeamish people, at least.) Does that reflect something of your own personality?
Well, I am very much into the dark side, nevertheless, I am an extremely hyper person. Honestly I’ve been trying to find out what is this all about, but again, I totally believe drum&bass and science have made me a complete human being.

You’re obviously quite a scientific person – do you bring any of that to your DJing?
Absolutely. Like my scientific mind has helped me a lot with finding the right cue points when mixing. It bothers me sometimes though, like I am highly nerdy and not that relaxed, and dealing with people is a big problem for me as well…

Can drum & bass be reduced to a scientific formula? (eg. E=MC2, power=Voltage x Amps)
The formula thing is not my field, I can try, well, let’s make it this: E=drum*bass? Hope it is not too lame.

Where’s it happening musically and club-wise in Guangzhou? If we ended up in Guangzhou with a free night, where would you take us?
Guangzhou... Well, I’d be the money maker if I start to spin hiphop or house here. Haha, you’d have a good time when I am throwing a party.
