Deli Delight: Cold Cuts & Cheese to Please

Missing that old neighborhood delicatessen with its dried meats, cheese and wines? Well don’t fret for too long, Beijing has more than enough to suit your needs. Here are our recommendations for some of the best; if you’re lucky, the deli closest to you might also double as a bakery.

April Gourmet
Recently moved across the street from its old Jiezuo Dasha location, taking over the site of a former hot pot restaurant. The new space is vastly bigger, allowing for a bigger stock of imported foodstuffs and alcohol, in addition to deli counter items like salads, cheeses and more. There’s even a counter where you can have an entire meal prepared for you to take home, and a small selection of imported magazines like Time, Newsweek and The Economist. Daily 7am-midnight. Gourmet Corner

Jenny Lou’s

Kempi Deli

This deli has a decent selection of meats, cheeses, ready-made salads and appetizers. Match it up with the onsite bakery’s hearty breads (whole wheat, raisin and walnut), pastries, scones and a few shelves of wine and groceries. Bakery and deli goods are half-price from 8-9pm. Piazza Italia [Editor's Update: This shop's been closed!]
The first floor deli offers a selection of Italian cheeses (parmesan, reggio etc.) as well as olives, meats (prosciutto) and antipasti (baby squid). Panini prices are RMB 15 and up. Schindler’s German Food Center
Your one-stop wienerschnitzel wunder. In addition to sausages and other tantalizing raw and cooked meats, Schindler’s stocks a wide selection of imported cheeses, including Emmental, gruyère, cheddar and several goudas. Slap that meat and cheese across a freshly baked baguette or rye, add a bottle of imported wine or Ukrainian honey pepper vodka, and you’ve got yourself a tasty sandwich and a drink.
