2010 Dec 15 Midi Awards Nomination – Who Rocks Out Best in China?

Now in their second year, the Midi Awards remain the one and only rock music awards in China. Those who have contributed most to the still growing rock music industry in China over the past year will be honored at the Star Live on New Year’s Eve, where Beijing’s rock royalty will gather to collect awards and take to the stage – and Midi has just revealed the award nominations. If you have trouble following what’s what in Chinese rock, this is a whole list of the best of 2010. (Click on the links to have a listen.)

On Tuesday the judges met at Yugong Yishan to finalize the nominations – a group comprising 128 representatives from record labels, live music venues, related associations, media and fans. Their final list covers 12 categories and includes 31 nominees.
Miserable Faith has won the most love so far with seven nominations (including two songs nominated as “Song of the Year”). Helen Feng, singer of Free the Birds (formerly Ziyo) will be the English host of the night while defending her title of Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: Ex-Joyside's Side Project, All Guitar Stars Party

With fire crackers still keeping the city loud and noisy, it seems reasonable for our local musicians to rest for another night. If you really have the urge to see a gig tonight, a pop punk tribute to Bob Marley at Gulou Dongdajie's MAO Livehouse might be enough to re-warm your rock and roll nerve. Apart from that you don't have many options. But don't worry - the music scene will start its post-chunjie revival on Saturday.

  • Queen Sea Big Shark's Secret Free Gig

This Friday, 150 people will be invited to join a secret party in the CBD area with Beijing's favorite dance rock outfit Queen Sea Big Shark. The event will be filmed for a documentary and recorded for a Sharks' live EP.

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: P.K. 14, Carsick Cars, Acoustic Metal Show

Local record label Maybe Mars is a bit obsessed with distinguishing generations lately. Their new release Generation Six just came out recently, twelve songs from four bands (Rustic, Birdstriking, Flyx, Old Fashion) make up this album; left people wondering what the other five generations are. Half of the question is getting answered tonight. Three bands of three different generations gather at Yugong Yishan tonight: Mr. Graceless didn't make their songs to the Generation Six album but got to represent them with Carsick Cars and Post-rock icons P.K. 14 representing two older generations.

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: Slap, Buyi and the Best Chinese Metal Band Yaksa

Earlier this week a weibo (微博) post by folk/rock band Buyi stating that their gig tonight at Jiangjinjiu will probably be their last at the venue set off a swirl of speculation that the popular Gulou area club had closed down and was set to be demolished – a rumor that was dispelled (somewhat) the following day when the band explained they had merely heard that Jiangjinjiu will be torn down in March. The management, for its part, claims no further knowledge and says it will remain open until the wrecking ball comes.

  • Midi Awards Go To:

New Years Eve at the Star Live, Free the Birds "flied," Hanggai khoomeied, punkheads jumped with Misandao, metal diehards moshed with Suffocate. In the last few hours of 2010, Midi Music School awarded some of the best rock bands and musicians with heavy bronze biricks infront of around one thousand excited fans.

Influential rock stars Zhang Chu (张楚) and He Yong (何勇) surprised the Midi supporters by presenting awards. While another rock icon Xie Tianxiao ended up as the biggest winner of the night. Helen Feng brought a stunning show with Free the Birds, however lost the Best Female Rock Vocal Performance to Queen Sea Big Shark's Fu Han, though Fu Han hoped her band to win but not just herself.
