Who Defamed Roger Rabbit?: The Drop at Yue this Saturday

DJs Oshi and Tnem are the driving force behind The Drop parties, which have created a stir this winter with their mesh of dubstep, drum & bass and electro sounds. We thought it best to grab an interview with the lads while we still could, taking the opportunity to discuss celebrity rabbits, saving DJs from drowning and some sexy Valentine’s Day listening ahead of their party at Yue this Saturday, February 12.

What is The Drop?
A bass-driven party. A drop of dubstep, a drop of bassline, sprinkle some fidget house and tropical flavor, add a different guest DJ every month who plays what he wants to, and shake these for five hours. We wanted to create a party where we could play whatever we feel like.

Who is The Drop?
Oshi and Tnem, with a different guest DJ every month.

What are you hoping to achieve with The Drop in 2011?
Our goal is to have fun and share it with as many people as possible. Also to add more choice to Beijing nightlife, and share the music and DJs we like.

And besides DJing, have you got any other projects lined up for 2011?
We’ve been putting mixes online every month for the past year, and the Night Force website is under construction. As for production, we’ve both been making music for ten years, but with different aliases. However, we don’t really want to mix DJing and producing, since we don’t especially produce the kind of music we play.

For years, The Syndicate were more or less lone voices promoting drum & bass and dubstep in Beijing. Is that changing now?
The Syndicate has been in the game for years and is a good example of what we need here. We believe that people will join forces and sort things out in 2011.

A bunch of Beijing DJs find themselves in a sinking ship with only one lifejacket. Who gets the lifejacket?
LIman or A.M.U. Amazing DJs and producers, and the future of electro in China. But we’re sure they can manage to save their asses with only one lifejacket between the two of them.

If all the clubs in Beijing were suddenly condemned, but you could save one of them, which would it be?
Hard question. Since we have no interest in any clubs, none of them deserves salvation more than any other. We’d save the one that helps the local scene the most, but we don’t have one in mind so far …

Who would you most like to see playing in Beijing?
Way too many of them to name just one, but probably Kenji Kawai, the Japanese composer of the Ghost in the Shell soundtrack. His shows are absolutely breathtaking.

It’s the Year of the Rabbit. Who’s your favorite celebrity rabbit?
Roger Rabbit. Such a loser, but he got the hottest babe.

Valentine’s Day question (sorry): You can have dinner with anyone for Valentine’s Day. Who, and what would you do?
We would treat our “angel” Ash to thank her for her help and support. We’d ask DJ Kitchen to cook for us – he's a great DJ and cook.
