2011 Mar 24 Breaking News: CBD on Fire

If you have looked in the sky this afternoon you can't help but have noticed that there's smoke been filling the air. There was a fire close to Hujialou Middle School (a few hundred meters southeast of Chaoyang Theater), an area around Chaoyang Beilu and the East Third ring road. The fire appears to have started in one small temporary structure - much like those put up to house construction workers when subways are being built - before spreading to another two similar buildings. Thankfully the fire now appears to be under control. We'll keep you posted with more info as we get it but for the time being you'd be better off keeping away from the area if you can.

News You Might Have Missed: Prison, Potatoes and Pooches

Exciting news for those who plan to commit a crime and then get caught: Prison reforms have lifted bans on homosexuality, dyed hair and "other lifestyles and practices" that were previously not allowed in prisons. Note: It's not full-on prison homosexuality in the popular sense. Also, we have no idea what these "other lifestyles and practices" are. If anyone wants to go undercover in your local gaol, we'll pay for your taxi fare.
News You Might Have Missed: Bargain-Hunters, North Korea and Talent Shows

StuffChinesePeopleLike.com might not be a blog yet but it could soon be after recent attempted purchases and things that have been pointed out as popular. Such as failing baseball teams. The LA Dodgers may be troubled (a disappointing season, fan violence, empty stadiums, bankruptcy, not being from Brooklyn anymore) but Chinese investors want to buy them all the same. "State-owned investment institutions of the PRC" are backing a USD 1.2 billion all-cash bid, the largest sale price ever for Major League Baseball (and well over the team’s estimated worth of USD 800 million). The bid has technically expired but the offer still stands; there has been no response from the team owner.
Superstars Coming To Beijing: Westlife, Will.i.am & Eminem (maybe)

In case you didn’t read this article from CNN, Will.i.am is coming to play in Beijing, in a concert with other US and Chinese pop stars, which will be organized by Americans Promoting Study Abroad. According to the rapper from Black Eyed Peas, they want to help American kids to “become responsible global citizens” and let more of them to “have the opportunity to study and travel abroad.” Coming along to kick it with Will is none other than Hillary Clinton.
