2011 Jun 07 Wuhao: Fashion Insiders’ Favorite Beijing Boutique Goes Public

One of our favorite Beijing boutiques has just officially opened to the public.

We first wrote up Wuhao in our March issue (read here). The French-owned and curated store had been operating for about a year, but only those in-the-know had access to it. No publicity had been done; its reputation grew based on word-of-mouth alone. The front gates were locked – you had to ring a doorbell to enter – and there was no sign, no regular business hours.

Now that Wuhao has passed its first anniversary, that’s all set to change. From now on, the shop will be open every week from Wednesday through Sunday, 2-8pm.

Below are photos from their latest Spring 2011 installation. (With the help of young Chinese designers, Wuhao adapts its environment and stock every season based on the five elements.) The theme for the season of growth was woods, greens, blossoming and emergence.

Wuhao. Wed-Sun 2-8pm, or by appointment. 35 Mao’er Hutong, Dongcheng District (6400 5435; 189 1135 5035) 东城区帽儿胡同35号

  • Your Guide to Beijing Design Week

Milan Design Week just celebrated its 50th anniversary this past April. Last week, London entered its ninth year of hosting Design Festivals. And now, for the first time in history, Beijing is joining in with a version of its own.

For those who have not been keeping track, Beijing Design Week (Sep 26-Oct 3) can seem a little overwhelming. There are simply so many options – over 2,000 works of design from over 30 countries, in fact – that it can be tricky to determine which exhibitions are worth seeing.

  • Insider’s Tour of “Culture Chanel” Exhibition

Following in the footsteps of Louis Vuitton and Bulgari, Chanel is hosting a retrospective exhibition titled "Culture Chanel" at the National Art Museum of China (NAMOC) from November 5 to December 13.

For China’s growing nouveau-riche population, the House of Chanel hits the mark in many ways. It’s French (read: highbrow), longstanding (read: reliable) and bears an iconic (read: easily recognizable) logo. No wonder it is currently ranked as the second most-desired brand in China after Louis Vuitton, according to research firm Bain & Co.

  • Alexander Wang Arrives With a Bang

Cold cement benches swathed in woolly pelts. Asphalt floors offset by bronze and mirrored walls. Sleek leather couches made unpretentious by lovingly worn creases. One feels very small at Alexander Wang’s second store in the world, a 4,000sqm space that perfectly captures the brand’s aesthetic contradictions: austere but natural, functional but flattering, and trendy but timeless.

  • Turn Your Swag On: Swag Store

The word that comes closest to capturing its essence is confidence. Short for “swagger,” “swag” is determined by the way you carry yourself: your speech, your gestures and of course your style of dress.

Big shoes to fill – so does this shop make the cut?

  • Till Death Do Us Part: Bihe Bridal Gowns and Weddings

Unless you’ve already tied the knot, you’re likely unaware how starved for options Beijing is for wedding apparel. Overseas returnee Violet Li (and wife of Ed Hung, founder of NLGX Design Store) hopes her first Beijing shop can finally fill the gap between fashion and bridal wear.
