2011 Sep 29 Holiday Live Music Roundup: Modern Sky Festival, Mamer & IZ

Long weeekends always remind me of unpacking. All the people who were nicely packed in giant buildings in big cities are suddenly spread all over the country, creating a big mess before it gets repacked. Maybe not going anywhere would be the best choice, we can just go hide in the dark corners that we are familiar with, and be accompanied by the music nerds.

Helen Feng, the front women of Free The Birds keeps going on her electronic road, her solo project Nova Heart aims to bring a good party to Zhangzizhong Lu tomorrow night. More likely to get over packed on the same night is 2 Kolegas - Converse and Thrasher magazine organized this free event there with Subs, Rustic and two punk bands from the US. Punkheads should not go anywhere else unless they have a very good excuse.

The week in the dark corners can also be very relaxing. You can catch the Beijing Beatles at the V.A bar on Saturday if not tomorrow at MAO Livehouse. Elsewhere, our chill but hardworking jazz musicians keeps our nights easy listening. There’s Mademoiselle et son Orchestre at 2 Kolegas (Oct 5) and V.A bar (Oct 6), Jess Meider with her jazz project (Oct 4) and more.

If you still want to get out of the city, what better chance can you have than Modern Sky Music Festival? The lineup with Mogwai and The Go! Team spearheading it is convincing. On the Chinese side, we surely won’t miss the names like Carsick Cars and Re-Tros. If you couldn’t make it all the way to Huairou District, you will still be able to catch some of the bands who are nice enough to have another show after the festival, like German post-metal guys The Ocean (Oct 6). The one no one should miss is Mamer and his band IZ (Oct 5). Their album is the best thing that happened this year and what experimental music should sound like!

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: Hanggai, Shanren, Demerit, will.i.am

These past two years have been a booming time for folk music in Beijing. Maybe it’s because more and more people started to find out how easy it is to just pick up an acoustic guitar and sing a song of sorrow with face full of bitterness. The good part is that the really good bands have actually stood out even more. Take Hanggai and Shanren, these are two quite different yet similar bands, one fuses Mongolian folk tunes with the power of rock, the other mixes folk rock with reggae beats. Both are fun, energetic, interactive and exotic. If you plan it well, you might be able to catch both of them tomorrow night.

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: Midi Awards, Yaksa, Abigail Washburn

Are the music maniacs really becoming more and more active in Beijing? Is it just their reaction to a cold winter? It was only midweek, but celebrations started yesterday. Australian metal-core band Parkway Drive and British electro newbie Chad Valley went to Gulou Dongdajie, rocking MAO Livehouse and Temple bar real good. We hope you still have energy left because there’s no time to rest, not even for one night.

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: New Pants, Da Bang, Free The Birds

Among all the “underground” rock bands in Beijing, New Pants is probably the closest to the “mainstream,” even though they might not like that fact so much. They actually haven’t been very active in the live music scene lately but spent their time on short movies and stage plays. Finally they are having a big show at a big venue – where they can put their crazy nerdy ideas onto the stage. Catch up with them tomorrow night at the Beijing Exhibition Theater. I hope you won some free tickets from us, because tickets are not cheap.

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: Re-Tros, Punk KTV, Halloween Parties

For some people this is the time of the year to go crazy. To others, it is when they will finally feel normal. Dark eye liners will not make you look rock & roll or gay, crazy hair styles and eccentric clothes will just fit in the crowd.

Let’s check out where there will be a crowd. On Friday, some so called post-rock bands will show you how hard they can rock at D-22. Keep an eye on the new band Illness Sickness, they have only four songs so far, but they show a lot of potential. There's also the one Halloween show that you should always be looking forward to ... the annual Punk KTV on Sunday over at the same venue. Go up and sing! It won’t matter if you don’t know any of the lyrics, it’s punk.

  • Weekend Live Music Roundup: Jojo Mayer, Residence A, Zhao Laoda

There’re so many anniversaries this weekend, but let's focus on other good acts first. Starting with tonight, New York based drum legend Jojo Mayer and his band Nerve drops by Yugong Yishan. Have a look at some of the videos; you know that it would be awesome to see him live. It's not the only option offered tonight. Saxophonist Li Tieqiao, founder of the only Avant-garde Music Festival in Beijing brings his Sheng Dong Ji Xi session to the hutongs. This time, he invited jazz trio Vasko Atanasovski VATT from east Europe to make it more relaxing.
