2011 Dec 27 What to Wear: New Year’s Eve, Women’s Edition

You’ll need something sexy and glamorous for this evening. (And to think that just last week we were espousing ugly Christmas sweaters. Sigh.) We typically discourage overembellishment and glitz in everyday getups, but on New Year’s Eve, it’s your time to shine. With that in mind, here is our proposed outfit for partying your way to 2012.

1. Wanda Dress by Jones and Jones, RMB 740 (Topshop and FEI Space - while supplies last)
There’s no other day in the year where sequins look so appropriate (except, perhaps, on your birthday). Whether you decide to go for sexy lace, sheer chiffon or skintight bandage, make sure you keep the length of your dress short. This is the night to play up your youth, and celebrate decadence and fun.

2. Purple Snakeskin Handbag, RMB 1,550 (D-SATA and Luxbible.com)
This compact handbag by local brand D-SATA (DimSum of all things Asian) comes equipped with a handy metal chain to swing over your shoulders and keep your hands free. Plus the purple snakeskin adds a touch of necessary texture and color. Pack light so you can dance all night long.

3. Blue Eye Ring, Price TBD (Nicolas Favard)
Don’t forget to deck out in bling, too. We hate ostentatiousness, but on New Year’s Eve, more is more. Be showy. Heck, don some long chandelier earrings too. Nicolas Favard, a Frenchman whose jewelry studio is based in Beijing, handcrafts architecturally beautiful metal and gem pieces.

4. Suede Ankle Booties by Jean-Michel Cazabat, RMB 2,000+ (Villa Rouge and Shopbop.com)
Ankle boots add instant edge to any outfit – even more so when paired with mini dresses. The tightened cinch on the ankle of this pair will elongate the legs, plus keep your feet toasty-warm.

  • What to Wear: New Year’s Eve, Men’s Edition

Guys, don't let the ladies outshine you this Saturday evening. You need to put some effort into your getup. Unlike your female counterparts, however, you’ve got to strike a cool balance between suave and nonchalant. (Girls, click here for your guide.)

While the women are decking themselves out in sequins, you can spruce up your look with a collared shirt, a tie or even a bow tie. We’d argue against the full-on suit – unless, of course, you’re hitting up a black tie or cocktail affair. Whatever party you choose (see our Nightlife Editor’s complete list here), you’ve got to enter the New Year looking fresh, confident and composed. The outfit we have in mind is for a more casual occasion. See below for inspiration.

  • Topshop and Topman in Beijing? The Exclusive at FEI

Up until now, Topshop and Topman have only been accessible to China residents via their online websites. All that’s about to change.

FEI Space – a concept store in 798 that’s been likened to New York’s Opening Ceremony (by us), a “genteel flea market” (by Stylites.net) and “a creative bazaar” “with a salvaged-chic vibe” (by the New York Times) – sits at the helm of Topshop and Topman's entrance into the Chinese mainland market.

  • Luxury at Your Fingertips: E-shops That Ship to Beijing

We already compiled a list of online shopping options earlier this year, but since then a number of luxury brands have begun clamoring to enter China. Plus, deals and discounts abound at the moment, just in time for the holidays. We’ve identified the ones that will serve you best below.

Here’s our pick of splurge-worthy e-shops that now ship to Beijing.

  • Ray P. Lee of FEI Space

FEI Space just under went its latest renovation, still stocking the same range of impressive labels – from American cult favorite Alexander Wang to much-hyped Chinese designer Zhang Da – along with exclusive new additions. Starting this month, FEI can officially claim credit for guiding Topman’s (and soon Topshop’s) first entry into the Chinese mainland. Here, creative director Ray P. Lee dishes on sex saddles, wedding photos and why he thinks 798 has changed for the worse.
