2012 Feb 02 World Class: Beijing's Beautiful Bookstores

In a ranking of the world’s twenty most beautiful bookstores, Beijing appears twice as much as any other city. Amidst converted cathedrals and Greek isle hole-in-the-walls, The Bookworm and Poplar Kid’s Republic show that they have what it takes to stand up with the prettiest of them.
The list, published on Flavorwire.com, declares that “there’s magic in the air at” The Bookworm and asks, “How could any kid (or adult, for that matter) resist those delicious reading nooks?” at Poplar Kid’s Republic, a children's picture book store located at Jianwai Soho.

This isn’t the first time The Bookworm has received international acclaim. Back in 2010, the BBC placed the local lending library in its list of the world’s ten best bookstores, citing the book talks, whisky and wine tastings, and, of course, their annual literary festival, among the reasons behind the decision.
As The Bookworm International Literary Festival (BLF) approaches, now is the perfect time to grab a ticket to an event (perhaps one featuring a collaboration between The Bookworm and the Beijinger, taking place on Mar 14 and 16) and spend some time in one of the world’s best and most beautiful bookstores.

How Does China Rock? Jon Campbell's Here to Tell Us

When asked about the unsung heroes of Beijing’s rock scene, the bassist from Wudaokou-spawned band Reflector blurted out, “Jon Campbell. The Dr. Bethune of China’s rock scene. Absolutely.” If that’s not enough of an endorsement for you, I don’t know what else to tell you.
Bookworm Festival Tickets On Sale!

It’s time for the rest of us late-rising birds (I guess that would be owls, then?) to get our shot at buying tickets for the upcoming Bookworm International Literary Festival. Here, we list the events most likely to sell out fast, as well as some of our own recommendations. Get ‘em while they’re … not sold out!
The Early Bird Gets the Bookworm Festival Tickets!

All, it’s that time of year again: The Bookworm International Literary Festival (BLF) is drawing near, bringing authors of great acclaim to our humble town. We hear some people mark their calendars for this event and, even though they’ve left Beijing years ago, plan two-week vacations to come back and attend the festival. (!!) It’s quite the shindig, and each year the authors and events just keep getting better.
Art Attack: Movie Awards, Flying Koreans, Haggis and Author Anticipation

It’s awards season in the movie world, and apparently that means everyone’s in the mood to get a tan – from (cinema, TV and computer) screens, that is. At least, the sudden upsurge in film screenings in Beijing would support this notion. Also this week: crazy Koreans making you laugh with high-strung family drama played out with martial arts and bodies flying around, and of course the annual Burns Supper at The Bookworm.
Art Attack: The Battle of the Book Fests Begins

If you haven’t caught the Great Dane at LAN Club yet, this weekend’s your last chance. On a (just slightly) more wholesome note, the Cinderella Panto starts up downtown this weekend, produced by Beijing Playhouse. Then, it’s a time for books galore, with great author events and a book bazaar.
Even more exciting, the battle for the hearts of Beijing’s bookish continues as The Bookworm International Literary Festival (BLF) gets ready to recruit volunteers, and Capital M starts rolling out book talks/discussions that are no doubt meant as stepping stones toward their own more nascent literary festival. Dear readers, come next March, how will you choose?

Bizarre…
I guess Alex at the Bookworm is friends with someone at Lonely Planet. The BBC just aggregates articles these days without checking and then flavorwire just copied from the BBC.

Cronyism and a reliance on poor and lazy internet journalism.
