2012 Feb 21 Mission Impossible? Help This Girl Meet Westlife!

Here at the Beijinger, we aim to bring people together. Usually, we don't get too involved - whether it's the Forum or the Classifieds, we normally settle for providing the platform, sitting back and letting you all get on with it. (We don't want to know what "it" is, thanks.)

But we get some strange old emails, and today, one of them has shaken us into action. We're stepping in to try to make one girl's dream come true. And we need your help. The challenge: Can you help Susi meet Westlife?

Westlife are playing Beijing on Wednesday night (Feb 22), for what they promise will be their last-ever Beijing show on their last ever tour. And apparently this girl, a German by the name of Susi, is a huge fan of the band who has traveled all the way from Hawaii to Beijing to see her heroes one final time.

We know this because a friend of Susi's named Ella emailed us with this plea, offering several good reasons why Susi deserves the chance to meet Westlife:

"Hello,

can you think of a person that can unite 50 different nations to support a trooper? Or a person that has the ability to raise a lot of money for the world hunger organisation with nothing but having a lot of drive, energy and dedication?

This is a message from a German girl for one of my best friends who has changed the world multiple times already. I'm sending you this message for my friend Susi who lives in Hawaii at the moment. She is well traveled has been to more than 70 countries and lived in 7.

While her boyfriend was on deployment, Susi managed to get more than 300 women from more than 50 countries together to send a peaceful message to support him overseas. She worked on this project for 6 weeks straight, she also collected more than 100 letters raging from Brazil over South Africa, Japan the US and Europe to be forwarded to him as well. Here is a link to the overwhelming and peaceful project she did:

Other than that Susi has been an ambassador for the Hard Rock Cafe. She raised about $7000 (US Dollars) for the world hunger organisation for countries like Thailand, Dominican Republic, USA, which made her the second highest fundraiser out of all the Hard Rock Cafes and Hotels all over the world. She is going to be sent on a mission trip to represent the company soon.

Susi is visiting Beijing and Shanghai next week to see her favorite band Westlife in concert. Susi loved them for 14 years and described them as the band she has been listening to without ever getting tired of it for 14 years. Susi has been living in the US for years now but never lost her dedication to her favorite band. 4 months ago she flew over to the Philippines to see them. Now she is going on a 16 hour flight to China to see them on their last tour. It would be Susis biggest dream to meet Westlife one last time and thank them for the years of joy they provided with their Music. She said she heard them play, while visiting the world cup in South Africa. She said their Music helped her during her boyfriends deployment, whenever she was sad or helped her during stressful times.

Susi supported Organisations like the Make a wish foundation, to help sick children fulfill their dreams.

Susi supported Greenpeace and the Human society.

Susi raised $7000 (US dollars) for world hunger and changed the lifes of thousands of people with it.

Susi managed to unite 300 women from more than 50 countries to support a message of peace for a trooper most of them haven't even met.

Susi alone has been done an incredible job to support and help the world to get a little bit better.

Now, it would be the time to make 1 of Susis biggest wishes come true. To meet Westlife. Can you help me with this?

Ella, Essen Germany"

So basically, Susi is an all-round good egg. We'd very much like to get on the phone to Westlife and make Susi's dream come true. But we don't have their numbers. We're not even Facebook friends. That's why we need your help. If anyone reading this is involved with Westlife's Beijing concert and can help put Susi and Westlife in the same room, get in touch with us by emailing editor@thebeijinger.com.

And just for a reminder of why Susi's come so far, here's some vintage Westlife.

Regardless of whether or not they meet Susi, Westlife sing at the MasterCard Center on Feb 22. Tickets available at 400 610 3721. RMB 280- 1,288. 8pm.

She sounds like a nice girl, such a shame that she's obsessed with the shittest group ever to waste the planet's precious oxygen.
No, I don't have their phone number.

With all the results announced on Saturday at our 2012 Reader Bar & Club Awards party, now it's time to take a closer look at who won, who narrowly missed out and what it all means.

Yesterday we looked at the "Club of the Year" winners, so today we'll move on and look at the other one that everyone wants to win: Bar of the Year.

  • 2012 Reader Bar & Club Awards: Club of the Year

With all the results announced on Saturday at our 2012 Reader Bar & Club Awards party, now it's time to take a closer look at who won, who narrowly missed out and what it all means.

Let's start with one of the big ones. Traditionally, we've given a single "Bar of the Year" award marking one venue out above all others. In 2004, the very first year of the Bar & Club Awards, a nightclub (Cloud Nine) actually won the top award, but since then the Bar of the Year award has been dominated by cocktail bars (Centro, Q Bar, Mesh), all-rounders (Fubar, First Floor, Browns) and a sole rock venue (D-22). This year, we decided to give the clubs more room by creating a "Club of the Year" award to parallel the "Bar of the Year" contest. So what of the "Club of the Year" winners?

If you were one of the approximately 1,200 guests who came along at some point to our 2012 Reader Bar & Club Awards party at Sanlitun Soho on Saturday, we hope you had a good time. The numbers suggest that you must have - collectively, we managed to get through around 700 liters of beer, not to mention countless bottles of spirits and cans of wine spritzer. We're also pretty sure some of your memories of the day might be hazy at best, but isn't that what the photo galleries on this website are for?

(This is part 2 of 2 ... for the first batch of awards, see this post here)

If you've been lounging around at home all afternoon you might well have happened upon our first 2012 Reader Bar & Club award winners post. We could only let you know the winners in the first 18 categories at that stage - we had to save some excitement for the people who came down to the event itself - but now that all the award cats are out of their proverbial bags, we can fill you in on the second half of the winners' roll call. Here they come ...
