Is Beijing Lagging Behind?

By 2011, economic growth in Beijing had fallen to 8% while Tianjin surged to the 16% mark. Back in 1953, when the government resolved to have Beijing the center of politics, economics and culture in China, this led them to emphasize “production first, life later”. This would be the fate of Beijing and Beijingers for years to come, and by 1979 both the city’s industrial production and population were indeed muchhigher than Tianjin’s. But this trend seems to have stalled and indeed gone into reverse.
