May Day Rush Pushes Beijing Subway to New Record Passenger Volume

If things felt a little crowded yesterday on your subway commute home prior to the May Day holiday, it wasn't your imagination: Beijing's subway network hit a new all-time one-day passenger volume high yesterday, with 9.89 million passenger trips recorded. To put that in some perspective, that's enough to have transported every man, woman and child of Ireland AND New Zealand combined.

Passenger volume was highest on Line 10, with over 2 million trips made, followed by Lines 1 and 2, each with a smidgen over 1.5 million passenger trips yesterday.

With the entire city on a three-day holiday binge, expect the crowds to continue over the weekend.
