Thursday Was the Hottest Day of 2014, And It's Not Even (Solar) Summer Yet

Did Thursday feel a tad warm? It certainly was. Officially, the mercury hit 34.9 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit for you Americans), making it the hottest day of the year so far.

With summer already underway on the super-scientific Chinese lunar calendar, experts said that the temperatures are normal, Beijing News reported.

Yeah, maybe.

This brings up the mythical metric that outdoor work in China should be postponed once the temperature reaches 40 degrees Celsius, and limited to six hours per day when it rises to between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius. Number of times we remember that happening: zero.

Beijing is, as we know, not exactly over-air conditioned the way it might be in, say, a Hong Kong movie theater. That means only one thing: time to break out the Beijing bikinis (see photo above).
