Lightning Strikes: Beijing Records 6,790 Strikes in Storm Early Tuesday

Those up all night watching the World Cup on Monday night/Tuesday morning in Beijing were treated to a thunderstorm of epic proportions: Electric company geeks who track such data recorded exactly 6,790 lightning strikes overnight, according to The Beijing News. No reports of injuries due the lightning were reported.

Torrential downpours were another record-setting element of Tuesday morning's storm, with one weather station in Chaoyang recording 92mm of rain overnight, and one in Pinggu recording a massive 68.9mm in a single hour of the storm.

Forecasters report that we're heading into one of Beijing's brief rainy seasons, and that there's a chance of rain every day for the rest of this week; as of this morning, Weather.com reports chances of rain between 10 percent and 80 percent for portions of eight of the next ten days.
