Flypizza & Hoodadak Chicken: A Slice of Wangjing, Downtown

To get you in the mood for the ongoing voting in the 2014 Pizza Cup, (see our roundup of pizza meal deals here) we've sent our minions out to patrol the streets for pizza. Here's a selection of what they've found:

Look up Flypizza & Hoodadak Chicken on Dianping and you will find almost 900 mostly rapturous reviews of their original Wangjing location. Wangjing is hardly a trek but those who don't fancy the trip can now sample a slice of the action in Sanlitun Soho instead.

The menu is simple, just pizza, fried chicken, and a few salads and pastas. The best-selling pizzas are the sweet potato (regular RMB 78, medium RMB 88, large RMB 98) and bulgogi (regular RMB 75, medium RMB 85, large RMB 95) flavors. The sweet potato version errs on the sweet side for the western palate, but the bulgogi is pleasant enough, topped with tender nubbins of beef. An Italian pizza chef might blanch at the idea, but actually there is a lot to like here, with generous cheese and crisp crusts. The adventurous can choose to upgrade to a sweet potato crust, a cheese crust or even a sweet potato AND cheese crust. These crazy kids.

Ok sure, the pizza passes muster, but what you're really here for is the chicken. The signature bird comes in ten flavors (RMB 80-85), including sweet and spicy sauce, garlic and even carbonara. If you've been paying even the slightest bit of attention to Chinese social media this year, you'll know that fried chicken goes with beer, so make sure to grab a frosty pint of Tsingtao (RMB 10, currently RMB 8 on promotion until October 31).
