Kranzler's Puts the "Fizz" Back into Brunch

It's easy to forget about old favorites in the face of newer, more exciting options, so sometimes it's nice to look back and reflect. Kranzler's has been a Sunday brunch favorite for a long time, but now they are making a fresh play for the hearts and minds of Beijing's brunchers with a new Champagne package.

The basic brunch package (RMB 398 plus service charge) includes free-flow Paulaner beer, red, white and sparkling wines, soft drinks, and tea and coffee, and now you have the option to upgrade to the Champagne package (RMB 498 plus service charge), which includes free-flow G.H. Mumm Champagne. Enjoy it in a lively room (some might say a touch too noisy), that feels less spread out than the Westin.

Below are some of the highlights of the brunch:

  • The seafood station is pretty comprehensive, with a selection of seafood salads and smoked fish in addition to the usual cold cooked lobster and crab.
  • As you might expect being housed in the same hotel as Paulaner Brauhaus, the German food is spot on. Any buffet display that has pretzel and pork fat has my vote.
  • Along with roast meats, the hot station has delicious melting Raclette cheese, served with boiled potatoes.
  • Waiters carrying pizza, donuts, and mini desserts thread their way around the restaurant to bring food straight to your table. That's right, you don't even have to leave your table to get a donut.
  • Cold desserts were average, but there were some fantastic hot desserts, including a spiced apple strudel and a chocolate brioche pudding.
