First Glance: The Bar-B-Q, Sanlitun

Barbecue fans have another place to get their meat fix in Sanlitun with the opening of The Bar-B-Q in the space formerly housing By The Tree. At the helm are Jack Zhou and Ajian and from The Bar, located just upstairs.

Food is standard Texas barbecue, cooked up by a chef with experience at Home Plate and with the consultation of an actual Texan who helped them build their smoker. So they've got brisket, chopped and sliced, pork ribs, rib tips, and smoked sausages. Combos clock in at RMB 95 for two meats, RMB 140 for three meats and RMB 195 for a taste of everything. They've also got various sides such as barbecue beef nachos (RMB 60) and barbecue wings (RMB 35).

The meats are good and smoky, although a touch dry for our tastes, but thankfully there are barbecue sauces on hand to remedy that. Skip the overly plummy Texas-style and stick to the pleasantly sweet Kansas or the slightly spicy Memphis.

Get down there during their soft opening for a couple of good deals: buy-one-get-one-free chopped brisket sandwiches on Wednesday and 30 percent off all food on Sunday

At the moment the space still has a lot of the hallmarks of By The Tree, but they'll be making some changes to the décor and adding some new drinks and beers over the coming weeks. We're looking forward to seeing what they come up with.
