Back For More: Ramo's Summer Menu

With hotter weather upon us it’s time for those restaurants that cater to summer dining to revamp their menus and tempt patrons with lighter flavors that detract from the furnace outside and convince you that it was actually a good idea to leave your air-conditioned hovel.

Ramo, Fangjia Hutong’s prime pizzeria and my personal go-to brunch spot, has done just that, creating a menu that builds on their previous offerings of American staples – pizza, burgers, salads – with an added twist to help you through Beijing’s imminent dog days.

We dug in with the summer salad (RMB 56), complete with honey melon, Parma ham, green leaves, and generous chunks of mozzarella – a simple but delicate dish that balanced the sweet elements with a dash of balsamic dressing. So as to try the altogether less healthy version, we also grabbed the spring salad on pesto pizza bread (RMB 48), the melon exchanged for slices of apple and avocado atop Ramo’s ever-improving pizza base.

Whereas Ramo’s initial bases suffered a little from being overly chewy, the recipe has clearly been altered, now offering one of the best pies in town. This was exemplified in their sausage and mushroom (RMB 18/slice, RMB 58/whole) and tuna, olive, and onion (RMB 18/slice, RMB 58/whole) pizzas, both cooked to perfection, boasting a light but chewy and browned crust topped with fresh ingredients and liberal amounts of cheese.

All-in-all, Ramo, with its lofty ceilings, huge bay windows, and outdoor seating, offers the perfect hutong space and to kill a weekend morning or to have a casual and filling post-work dinner and it’s the little improvements and variations since their opening last summer that have kept me coming back for more.
