Not Rolling Stones, Rolling Beers at Rolling Rolling Craft Brewing

When you ask around about people's impression of southeast Beijing's Yizhuang neighborhood, answers usually include "it’s too far," and "it’s in the middle of nowhere." Well, the one and only brewpub in Yizhuang may well be the reason for you to finally hop on the subway and roll on down there.

A young Chinese couple soft-opened the Rolling Rolling Craft Brewing (滚滚精酿), intending to break the impression of that "it’s brewpub-less in south Beijing," says owner Chen Chen.

Stepping into the space, the first thing you'll notice are the six stainless-steel, 300-liter fermenting tanks and two mashing tanks (which is a sign that your thirst will be quenched) sitting on the other side of the windows that line one wall of the bar, as well as the rich rock music, embracing you warmly and tightly.

Chen Chen used to be a bass player in a rock band called  Rolling Rolling/水纹 (a.k.a Ripples), and started to brew in his spare time five years ago. "Last year, while I was brewing, I was looking at the boiling wort and noticed the ripples of the wort boiling and rolling, and I thought Rolling Rolling is it!” Chen remembers. “Also, rolling on the floor is a sign of being happy without being chained. So I decided to call the brewpub Rolling Rolling."

There are currently six beers on tap, of which we recommend the stout (4.5 percent, RMB 50). Particularly pleasing on the palate thanks to the nitrogenation process, which makes the cream smooth, and the toasty hazelnut and subtle hoppy aromas make your face light up unconsciously. For the bitter beer lovers, the IPA (7.2 percent) or APA (4.8 percent) are a strong choice (both RMB 40). The wheat beer (3.5 percent) should suit those that prefer light beers. “Yesterday a guy who lives in this neighborhood came in and drank seven pints of IPA, and left happily without stumbling, it was just amazing,” says Chen’s wife.

Besides the drinks, there are hand-ground beef burgers, nachos, fried potato balls made of smashed potatoes and light cream (highly recommended), and handmade sausages. Pale ale and cider are brewing in process, and will be available soon.

The easiest way to reach Rolling Rolling is to take the subway to Yizhuang Culture Park, walk to the Linkin Park South Gate, and on to the Sunken Plaza.
