Beer and Big Screens For Euro 2016 at Kamehameha in Wangjing
Being accused that we were too snobby to report any beer bars outside of Beijing's downtown area, we dragged our arses further to Wangjing's Kamehameha, an imported beer bar that opened in February of this year.
Entering the bar, the first thing you'll see is their large screen and projector playing the Euro Cup 2016 games, and a big TV hanging outside towards the outdoor seating area, which comfortably fits 50 people. The bar is lit by a huge “Holy Drinkers” neon sign, which illuminates the 100 square meters of bar space and was designed by owner Wang Fanfei himself.
Wang is also a designer, a rock and hip-hop musician, as well as a football and beer lover, which led him to decide to open a bar in Wangjing, because, “growing up near Sanlitun, I want to open a bar somewhere distinctive and given that Wangjing has its own independent culture, I felt what Wangjing needed was a bar like this.”
The name Kamehameha comes from the king who conquered most of the Hawaiian Islands in 1810, and also means Turtle Devastation Wava in the Japanese manga series Dragon Ball, I’m not joking – click here to dig for more.
The bar has six beers on tap, including Estaminet pilsner, Konig Ludwig Weissbier, St-Louis Premium Kriek, Kenkucky IPA, Summer Stout, and Steenbrugge Wit at prices ranging from RMB 36 to 60. There are also about 30 imported bottle beers in the fridge, including brands popular throughout Beijing such as Rogue, Brewdog, and Ballast Point, all personal favorites of Wang's. Kamehameha also gets an extra point for always fetching a cold glass for every beer poured, something we need in these climes, but don't always get everywhere.
In case you're a stay-up-late football lover looking for replenishment, they also provide four different types of fish with chips: cod, flounder, sea bass, and basa fish (RMB 55 to 125), as well as German sausages, cheese burgers, and other bar snacks.
