China’s Box Office is Slumping, But That's Good News For You

New official figures have just come out showing China’s box office dropped in the second quarter, for the first time in five years.

While that sounds like bad news, it’s already having a good knock-on effect for cinema-goers hungry for more foreign fare.

The figures have been bad enough to prompt regulators to allow more Hollywood releases into the country during its traditional “blackout” period between late June and early August.

And if the trend for the second quarter results continue, it could mean even more Hollywood movies as regulators are tempted to allow more foreign fare in to keep box office growth figures up.

Here’s a list of some of the latest Hollywood movies for you to mark into your diary:

The Legend of Tarzan《泰山归来:险战丛林》
Out now
3D/IMAX3D/CFGS (China Film Giant Screen)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 36 percent
Critics' Consensus: The Legend of Tarzan has more on its mind than many movies starring the classic character, but that isn't enough to make up for its generic plot or sluggish pace.

Triple 9《红色警戒999》
Out now
It’s unclear at this stage what screens Triple 9 will be on.
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 55 percent
Critics' Consensus: Triple 9's pulpy potboiler thrills don't quite live up to the ferocious talents of its cast, but the film's efficient, solidly crafted genre fun is often enough to balance its troublesome flaws.

The Secret Life of Pets 《爱宠大机密》 (pictured at top)
August 2
2D/3D/CFGS
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 74 percent
Critics Consensus: Fast-paced, funny, and blessed with a talented voice cast, The Secret Life of Pets offers a beautifully animated, cheerfully undemanding family-friendly diversion.

Jason Bourne 《谍影重重5》
August 23
2D/3D/IMAX 3D/CFGS
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 61 percent
Critics' Consensus: Jason Bourne delivers fans of the franchise more of what they've come to expect which is this sequel's biggest selling point as well as its greatest flaw.

Ice Age: Collision Course《冰川时代5:星际碰撞》
August 23
2D/3D/IMAX 3D/CFGS
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 12 percent
Critics Consensus: Unoriginal and unfunny, Ice Age: Collision Course offers further proof that not even the healthiest box office receipts can keep a franchise from slouching toward creative extinction.

Star Trek Beyond 《星际迷航3:超越星辰》
September 2
3D/IMAX 3D/CFGS
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 84 percent
Critics Consensus: Star Trek Beyond continues the franchise's post-reboot hot streak with an epic sci-fi adventure that honors the series' sci-fi roots without skimping on the blockbuster action.
