Migas' Updated Winter Brunch Aims to Spoon Away Your Winter Chills

With the mercury dropping rapidly, here at the Beijinger's foodie desk our thoughts are turning to soups and stews, mulled wine and hot chocolate. Clearly, the folks in the kitchen at Migas are on the same page because they have just updated their brunch offering to what they call "The Spoon Brunch."

The "spoon" element refers to spoonable dishes, the type to be served family style, in big portions. There will be a weekly changing selection of stews, such as lentils with chorizo or escudella (a traditional Catalan stew). On the day we visited there was a Halloween-inspired pumpkin soup, a spicy chicken and potato stew, and a stew of tender octopus and lima beans (our favorite).

Don't worry if you were a fan of previous iterations of the Migas brunch – they have kept some of their most popular offerings, including their Spanish omelet and incredible home-cured cold cuts. There is also a do-it-yourself salad bar for those who prefer to keep it healthy (one can't live on pork fat alone, after all).

Migas' usual paella has also had a spoonable makeover, transforming into a soupy lobster rice, featuring chunks of shell-on lobster and prawns in a deeply seafood-flavored stock. They are planning to give diners lobster clamps so they can get as much meat as possible out of the sizeable claws. While the rest of the brunch is self-service, the lobster rice is brought over to your table around halfway through, as is the "sausage cart," featuring a selection of homemade sausages (morcilla, chorizo, and herby pork), which are carved to order and served with crushed potatoes and seasoned spinach.

All of the above food is priced at RMB 268 per person, with the option of adding free-flow drinks (including Cordorniu Cava, wines, brunch cocktails, and tea and coffee) for RMB 148 per person. Objectively, that makes the Migas brunch one of the cheapest all-you-can-eat-and-drink deals in town at RMB 416 per person (and with no sneaky service charge). Reason enough for us to brave the winter cold.
