Burger Brief: Take a Break on Burger Break's New Xiaoyun Lu Restaurant and Patio

Burger Brief takes a look at some of the attendees of the Beijinger's 2017 Burger Cup. With the grill warming up ahead of the 2017 Burger Cup’s voting starting on May 22, the day after our May 20-21 Burger Fest, we spoke with Burger Break's owner Jean Ge about her burger.

After opening their first branch back in Shuangjing in 2014, Burger Break launched a second location on Xiaoyun Lu in April.

Our first impression was that its two floors and open al fresco patio makes for a great addition to Beijing's dining scene during these perfect and breezy early summer days.

The simple, diner-style menu is sufficient to feed the masses nearby, with four salads (RMB 28-58), and a stacked burger list (RMB 39-83) that includes among others a fish burger (RMB 39), a grilled chicken burger (RMB 45), a spicy burger (RMB 49), an avocado cheeseburger (RMB 65), a bacon cheeseburger (RMB 53), a double cheeseburger (RMB 83), and a veggie burger (RMB 45).

The signature avocado cheeseburger (RMB 65) comes without sides, but the large bun and beef patty topped off with chopped onion, lettuce, and tomato fills the plate by itself. “We use Australian or Canadian beef and make the beef patties by hand in our kitchen daily,” says owner Jean Ge, who studied F&B catering in Canada. The cheddar cheese boosted the flavor of the meat, while the chopped ripe avocado and coriander provided and extra layer of texture (and made for a messy burger, just how we like it).

The large cobb salad (RMB 58) came loaded with plenty of fresh ingredients, including lettuce, bacon, cheddar cheese, boiled egg, avocado, cherry tomatoes, and raw onion. The grilled chicken comes loaded with a nice spicy coating and the whole dish was brought together with a creamy Caesar dressing, which wasn’t heavy as it looked. For a little extra, you can choose to add extra grilled chicken, avocado, tuna, bacon, or egg.

They also offer hearty snacks, like buffalo chicken wings (RMB 38 for six pieces), onion rings, various types of fries (RMB 19-23), cajun tortilla chips (RMB 32), and fish and chips (RMB 29).

The strawberry milkshake (RMB 38) featured whole strawberries, which proved a slight issue to eat with a straw, but was nonetheless a delicious accompaniment to the summer breeze. Best yet, if you're wanting to experience the same on one of your bad hangover days, don't worry as they also deliver via Sherpa's.

After trying their burgers, we had a minute to chat to the Burger Break owner, Jean Ge, who's been working in F&B for over three years.

Tell us about your signature burger. What makes it the best burger in Beijing?
Our signature burger is the avocado cheeseburger, which is also the most popular one among our clients – the handmade patties are made with imported beef from Australia or Canada, flame grilled, and then topped with special sauce. The chopped avocado makes it refreshing and healthy without feeling heavy or greasy. Basically, we use the best ingredients we can find and pay a lot of attention to detail.

What drink from your menu goes best with the burger?
Our signature milkshakes, which come in three flavors – vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate – and are made using ice cream.

Tell us about the buns that you have for this burger.
We use buns from a trusted bakery who add natural butter to the dough. We then add extra butter when making the burger.
