Sherpa's Celebrates 18 Years of Foodie Fun With Big Giveaways

Sherpa’s is turning 18 years old this month. That's right, the food delivery company that saves you from sure starvation even when there's a torrential downpour/the AQI is off the scale/you just really, really don't want to go outside, is nearly two decades old.

Since starting operations in downtown Shanghai in 1999, Sherpa's has expanded across Shanghai and spread over to Beijing and Suzhou. Over millions of kilometers, countless meals, and the rise and fall of hundreds of partner restaurants, Sherpa's has always been committed to serving up tasty meals to hungry customers.

"How did it all begin?", you ask. Well, when tasked with finding an internship for his China Europe International Business School MBA, American Mark Secchia founded his own company instead. You guessed it. That company was Sherpa’s.

The original office was located in a cleaning company that Mark borrowed from his friend after the company closed the doors for the day at 5.30pm. After the cleaning team would clock out, the Sherpa’s crew would come inside to use the computers. The first baseball-hat wearing couriers were equipped with wooden delivery boxes strapped on the back of bicycles. The first uniforms came later when the mom of one of the original team members made them by hand.

It was a stressful start. Mark would stand outside of expat hubs in Shanghai like Plaza 66 and the Portman with photocopied menus, handing out fliers and asking people to try out the delivery service. After pulling out large amounts of hair, Mark contemplated calling it quits and dissolving the company. We’re glad he stuck it through though. Sherpa’s now partners with hundreds of partner restaurants and operates all across Shanghai, Beijing, and Suzhou!
