What’s Up in Beer: A Farewell Party at Beer Mania, New Brews at GLB and NBeer, and Beer Deals at 4corners

Happy Thursday, beer lovers. Bad news first: In case your summer wasn't already rife with tears and farewell parties, Thierry De Dobbeleer of Beer Mania is leaving China for real. But then there's good news: De Dobbeleer will be cracking numerous kegs for the occasion (more on that below).

Further good news from across the globe; Panasonic has revealed a voice-activated self-driving fridge at the IFA conference in Berlin (see picture above), a fridge that comes to you when summoned, serves you drinks, and even clears away your empties. Taking the concept of the couch potato to new heights, this fridge has made the future a little brighter (and much, much lazier).

As we mentioned last week, Thierry De Dobbeleer will soon hand over the keys of his 12-year-old Belgian pub Beer Mania in southern Sanlitun to new management. Say goodbye to Thierry and cherish your warm, boozy, cheery, crazy, and rambunctious memories of him this Sunday (Sep 10) at his farewell party, 6pm-2am. There will be one free keg of Belgian draft beer tapped every hour to help lubricate the celebrations.

Great Leap Brewing will release the Fallen General IIPA on Friday (Sep 8). Brewed in honor and remembrance of an old friend and colleague for a third time since its debut last year, the Fallen General IIPA (not a typo, it's an imperial IPA) was brewed with a passionate amount of their favorite American hops, with notes of lychee and citrus fruit to accompany an 8.6 percent ABV, available at all three locations.

NBeer has a Passby Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine on tap starting today (Sep 7). Brewed using single malt, single hops, and four varieties of yeast, this brew is aged for four months with flavors of nuts, tobacco, leather, and a hefty 12 percent ABV (available at all locations).

After adding two new beers on tap last week – Cow on A Boat and Flying Whale IPA – the Slow Boat Brewpub in Sanlitun has added another new beer this week, the Whiskey River Ale, with 5.4 percent ABV, with rye and woody notes. They've also cooperated with 4corners, so you can get a bucket of four Slow Boat Monkey's Fist IPAs and Zombie Pirate Pale Ales for RMB 120, or a portion of poutine and two bottles of Monkey's Fist for RMB 100. Take advantage of the deal until Sunday (Sep 10) and then return on Tuesday for their quiz night, when you can get four bottles of Monkey's Fist IPA for RMB 100.
