Eat Greens for Cheap at Sanlitun's Mixgarden aka the Subway of Salads

We can never get enough salad here at the Beijinger offices, and apparently neither can the health-loving Chinese public. In the lead up to the Beijing Burger Festival, we're trying to cram as much plant matter into our bodies so as to negate the incoming carb explosion. One place that we've been relying on since its discovery is Mixgarden aka the answer to a Subway sandwich for the salad masses.

At first, Mixgarden didn't look to be the most appealing salad bar given its quiet location in the basement of Ginza Mall and a hidden corner of Sanlitun Soho. However, those who had visited the bare-bones venue slowly begin to sing praises for its quality and price, a set RMB 38 per bowl.

Mixgarden runs on a simple concept: pick your favorite ingredients from the three dozen options which include a range of leafy greens, broccoli, pearl barley, quinoa, brown and purple rice, various seeds, corn, kidney beans, garnish, tuna, and a dressing. Then you add one from the six staples to beef up your serving (smoked salmon, chicken, beef, and shrimp).

We can't say that the ingredients are extraordinary but they're more than sufficient to satisfy for a quick and healthy lunch. From experience, the vinaigrette and Dijon mustard dressings are so far our favorites and the staff offered to add some olive oil to the mix. Better yet, you can also throw on some additional toppings such as cheese and crushed peanut.

Simply, Mixgarden is not the place for a high-end pre-mixed salad but an easy meal on the fly when you find yourself craving something healthy and cheap. For now, it'll remain in our lunchtime roster before we kick into top gear burger guzzling.
